Natural gas? We don't have that here, so we have a big propane tank.

I'm a bit concerned it'll impact our flight back from Oakland in the morning.

I'm not saying I'm worried the house will blow down... I just don't want a travel disruption.

I've seen a lot of the older construction out there when I was helping my late brother-in-law with rental homebuying.

I'd be worried about the house blowing down.

Yeah.  I thought I wanted something I didn't have to worry about refilling and that I didn't have to worry about running out if needed for an extended period.  In retrospect, I might rather have gone with the propane tank model, but too late now.

I think I mentioned here--probably in the Grumpy thread, if it was around back then--how bad the city screwed up our gas hookups several times before finally getting it right.  Major disruption to our yard, multiple times.

Then, just last week, I got the utility bill that included our usage from the tropical storm last month that knocked our power out for 3 days.  I noticed a gas charge and a fuel charge.  When I paid it I asked the clerk what was the difference, and what that meant.  She told me they use fuel in order to supply us natural gas, and on the bill it's split into separate charges, gas and fuel.  I'm not sure I understand, but it made me worried about what happens in a hurricane if they run out of fuel?  Am I any better off for having a generator if the city can't pump me gas?

iirc, the salesman I first worked with to get the process going told me one tank in the alternate model size I we were considering would last a home like mine, on average, a week, he said.  Two tank capacity would roughly equal two weeks, which would've been enough to get through hurricane Harvey, Rita, or any other disaster that's hit around here.  Yeah, I'd have to fool with refilling the tanks, but I'm not sure I understand the risks of the city supplying my gas.

That seems odd to me.

Propane is very expensive, by the way.

Australia Approves Giant Coal Extension Despite Paris Commitments

NSW's Independent Planning Commission approved the HVO Continuation Project, keeping one of Australia's largest coal complexes running into the 2040s and unlocking about 429 million tonnes of coal.
The commission ruled that jobs, royalties and regional stability outweigh an estimated 809 million tonnes of lifetime emissions, and attached conditions on export destinations, renewable power use and carbon offsets.
The project still needs federal environmental approval before year-end, and the decision lands weeks before Australia leads negotiations at COP31.

The New South Wales (NSW) Independent Planning Commission (IPC) approved an extension at the largest coal mine project in the region’s history in September, allowing it to continue operations until 2045, extracting an estimated 429 million tonnes of coal across its North and South sites. The Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) Continuation Project was approved following a contentious assessment that drew criticism from climate and environmental groups, unions, and state authorities.

Upon announcing project approval, the IPC said that while the mine would “contribute to climate change impacts on the people, economy and environment of the Hunter region, NSW and globally,” its development was necessary. The IPC stated the impacts have been “outweighed by its benefits to the Hunter region and NSW, including continued employment, economic activity, support for local business, ongoing royalties and taxation revenue”.

Looks like Long Beach took a beating from surge and waves, due to that tropical storm that landed out there. They are not used to this stuff. Those dorks are crazy for being in that house.

Have @betarhoalphadelta or @CatsbyAZ been seen since that storm came through? I hope they're all good and safe.
