Air Cooling Technologies
Air cooling utilizes fans, vents, and air conditioning to circulate ambient air and expel hot exhaust. It remains the most widely deployed technology globally due to its simplicity.
Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC): Powered by an internal compressor and direct expansion (DX) refrigerant loops to cool the room.
Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAH): Uses external water chillers to pump cold water through internal coils, cooling the air passed over them.
In-Row Cooling: Positions modular cooling units such as the APC InRow Series or Eaton Precision Systems directly between server racks, catching hot air at the source to prevent air mixing.
Hot/Cold Aisle Containment: Physical barriers isolate cold intake air from hot exhaust air, optimizing airflow dynamics and energy efficiency.
Liquid Cooling Technologies
Liquid offers higher heat transfer capacity than air, allowing data centers to manage extreme thermal densities.
Direct-to-Chip (Cold Plate): Mounts a liquid-filled block directly to processors like CPUs and GPUs. Coolant captures the heat, moving it through a closed loop to a Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU).
Immersion Cooling: Servers are submerged directly in a bath of non-conductive dielectric fluid. The fluid absorbs heat directly from all hardware components before circulating through a heat exchanger.
Facility Heat Rejection
Every server-level cooling system must eventually dump its heat outside the building via the facility loop.
Chilled Water Loops: Centralized chillers lower water temperature to circulate through the data hall.
Cooling Towers: Rejects heat into the atmosphere by evaporating a small amount of facility water.
Dry Coolers / Economizers: Uses ambient outdoor air to cool facility fluid, eliminating water consumption and lowering power usage when weather permits.
