Pick the Spring 2024 commencement program of your favorite, or random, Big Ten school and peruse the names of engineering Phd. or graduate degree candidates.  Kind of shocking.

My neighbor gave me a tour of Georgia Tech and I asked him why I didn't see more Asians.  He said "They are all inside studying."

His last grad student was Asian, one he liked quite a bit, I had no clue what he was studying after he told me.

My neighbor technically is Asian, but wouldn't think of it that way in the main.

In the Civil Engineering department at UW, it felt like ALL of the TA's were Chinese.

Most of my TAs at UGA were Asian back in the earaly 70s.  Many couldn't speak English that I could understand.  At UNC, they actually had a quota for native English speaking grad students.  A LOT of Indians came over in the 1980-2000 period, and then a lot of Chinese.  

I used to interview grad students at Ohio State and maybe half were Asian of some sort.  I recall one of them spoke great English but was otherwise not so impressive.
