I made $3/hr in 1980 as a pump jockey on the drive of a full service gas station

bumped me to $3.15/hr as I became late shift supervisor 3-11pm
an average 8 hr shift was around 3,000 gallons of fuel pumped

was responsible for totaling up the shift (accounting) and closing the place down (cleaning the bathrooms, mopping the floor) and locking up

I wouldn't trust a 17 year old to supervise a pet rock today.

he University of Michigan Survey of Consumers sentiment index for May posted an initial reading of 67.4 for the month, down from 77.2 in April and well off the Dow Jones consensus call for 76. The move represented a one-month decline of 12.7% but a year-over-year gain of 14.2%.

Along with the downbeat sentiment measure, the outlook for inflation across the one- and five-year horizons increased.
The one-year outlook jumped to 3.5%, up 0.3 percentage point from a month ago to the highest level since November.

Oddly enough, my step grandson is 17 and assistant manager at some shoe store in SD, and had been for about a year now.  We visited him there while he was working, he seemed to have it under control.

Regarding the need to be a member of a club to dring, I was traveling from Ohio to Texas in 1982 and made a stop in Little Rock AR for the night. My traveling buddy and I went to a local bar and had to pay $1 to be a member of the club in order to drink there. I found that odd.

Perhaps that was common in the south? It wasn't a weekend either, it was a Tuesday night. I know this because we (my traveling buddy) and I graduated High School Sunday and left late Monday headed to Texas, stopping in Illinois that evening before heading out Tuesday morning making it to Little Rock.

I never knew of it in Georgia, we did have dry counties back in the day (a law supported by moonshiners and sheriffs).  As noted, I encountered that in North Carolina in 1975.  Bars could not serve liquor.  "Clubs" could.

Ohio had/had some law about selling alcohol within 300 yards of a church.
