30 Best Cheeses Ranked According to Cheese Connoisseurs - (recipes.net)

Kinda funny, 9 of the first 10 are NOT from France.  And I personally agree France has amazing cheeses.  The list include Monterey Jack, which to me, well, forget this list.

well, I suppose it could be an upscale Monterey Jack from what I get at the local grocer.

Nothing wrong with MJ of course, except I wouldn't put it anywhere near any best cheese list.  The number of Italian and Swiss cheeses on that list is interesting.

I bet if I post a different "expert" list, it'll be, well, different.

World Cheese Awards 2023: Official Best Cheese in the World Announced (timeout.com)

Neither France nor the UK, two very proudly cheesy nations, had any entries make the top 10 – though British cheeses did have a strong presence on the list overall. You read all about the British cheeses that made the list here.
Here are the 10 best cheeses in the world right now:
  • Nidelven Blå from Gangstad Gårdsysteri (Norway)
  • Baliehof Houtlandse Asche Kaas from Baliehof Kaas En Zuivelboerderij Jabbeke (Belgium)
  • Eberle Würzig Seit 5 Generationen from Dorfkäserei Muolen (Switzerland)
  • Eleftheria Brunost from Vivanda Gourmet (India)
  • Müller-Thurgau Rezent from Käserei Müller-Thurgau (Switzerland)
  • Kärntnermilch Mölltaler Almkäse Selektion 50% FiT. from Kärntnermilch (Austria)
  • Michel from Rohmilchkäserei Backensholz (Germany)
  • Holland Delta, 1 Year Old from Van der Heiden Kaas (Netherlands)
  • Old Amsterdam Goat from Westland Kaasexport (Netherlands)
  • Parmigiano Reggiano 30-39 Months from Nazionale Parmigiano Reggiano Rastelli Fratelli (Italy)

Make France Grate Again: The best cheese in the world has been crowned | Euronews

Eight of ten from France, tasting held in Tours.

So, we are all working (or not) to taste various cheeses, that is the meaning of life.  Ironically, cheese is basically spoiled milk, wine is spoiled grape juice, beer is spoiled barley etc., sausage is spoiled pig meat not really good for much else, kimchi is spoiled cabbage, ...

Beef, in general, kinda sucks in Europe based on my experiences.

Best I had was in Tuscany. Next best would be Amsterdam, but the beef we had there was brought in from... Tuscany.

I had a filet in Corsica that just plain sucked.

Italy (outside of Tuscany) Spain, Croatia, Belgium, Montenegro not good.

I understand that Europe doesn't use feedlots for cattle (at all or nearly so).  This means it's all grass fed, and that means not much marbling.

My friend in Cincy who was the top chef (and French) explained that to me anyway.  I don't order beef in Europe.

Yup, beef in Europe sucks.  The good stuff is brought in from Argentina and it's incredibly pricey.

Might be why the French like to braise their beef, dishes like boeuf bourguignon and such.

I sold some stock yesterday, and wrote some covered call options today on Costco.  I'm not feeling great about this economy ahead even though it's an election year.
