Maybe we could have end of season pairings generated by random guys in sports coats and then just vote on it....

Don't forget the conference tie-ins.

Wait, that won't work since there's only 2 TV wants to push.

When it was evident that the BCS was here to stay, I was a fan of a plus one--pick the best 2 after the traditional bowl games and play that game at a neutral site.  Sure would have cured the Washington/Miami, Nebraska/Penn State, Nebraska/Michigan, LSU/USC problems.
But other years (Nebraska-Florida, USC-Texas), it would have been messier, although I guess you are saying those teams wouldn't have played.  In 1995 Nebraska would have gone to the Orange and Florida to the Sugar, and if they had won, then would have played after that.  Same in 2005 with Texas to the Fiesta and USC to the Rose.

I still think 8 is probably the right number.  I always liked the 6 BCS champs, and then 2 best at large.  Then when the Big East got raided, I thought 6 best conference champs.  Then I went to 5-3.

But either way, I wanted to quarterfinals to be the existing tie ins.  Rose was Big Ten champ vs. Pac Ten champ.  Orange got the ACC champ, Sugar got the SEC champ, and Fiesta got the Big XII champ.  Those 3 were seeded, and played the other 3 teams (Big East champ, At Large #1, At Large #2) in seeded order.  Avoiding conference rematches

So for example, in 2003 (the last year before the Big East was neutered)

ORANGE - #1 Oklahoma (AL) vs. #7 Florida State (ACC)
SUGAR - #2 LSU vs. #9 Miami (BE)
ROSE - #3 USC (P10) vs. #4 Michigan (B10)
FIESTA - #5 Ohio State (AL) vs. #10 Kansas State (B12)

Then the 4 winners are paired based on seed.  Is it totally fair?  No, but I think its a solid balance

I think part of the issue with bowls was getting rid of those tie ins.  It was nice knowing getting to a bowl was nice, but the Motor City Bowl for 6th place was a joke.  At least try to get to the 5th or 4th slots to get to the Sun or Alamo.  And getting to one of the three NYD bowls was a big deal.  MSU got their shit kicked in by Alabama in the Citrus Bowl in like 2010, but it was so cool to just be in an NYD bowl.  That solidified a legitimate season.

Once they put in all the rotation rules, their was no bowl ladder.  I think it was 2022, that MSU went 5-7, and lost their final game that would have made them bowl eligible.  But because of the repeat rules, if they had won that finale against Indiana, and been 6-6, they would have likely gone to the Citrus Bowl.

It'll be the team who gets to play someone who upset a better team in the round before.

True, but tbf, that already happened in the 4-team playoff when somebody (Michigan?) incorrectly let TCU through, to get curb-stomped by UGA.

I barely count that as a real NC for UGA.

Perhaps a better reason not to count it is that rather dramatic comeback over Ohio State.

And yes, Michigan lost to TCU.  I have wondered if TCU changed its signals and sent false flag signals to UM knowing they'd bite on them.

I thought Michigan just wet the bed.  TCU was a good team, but they shouldn't have beaten the Wolverines.

I hope they reseed each round like the NFL does.  They won't, but that would at least reward seeding.  I think teams could punch one round above their weight, but that's it

I thought it was well understood that TCU played with its hair on fire ? Everybody knows that.

Color me in disagreement.

Had Michigan prevailed in that war v. TCU, imo Georgia may very well have curb-stomped them as well.

Of the many things about the 24 team playoff that are rotten, the worst might be is that is an agreement between CFP and ESPN.  🤮🤮
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.
