I like idea of a 24 team playoff.  In the current portal era its better to just get your season done in early December unless you make it to the final 8.

This is so fucking stupid.

Zero actual interest in crowning the best team as national champion.  None.  Just money money money.  Nothing else matters.

If you're going to expand...

...get rid of bye games!!!

But if you HAVE to go 24, top 8 should get HFA in the round of 16.

Race to the bottom.

The larger the playoff, the lower % of times the actual best team will win the NC.

I hope someone like the AP crowns a regular-season national champion.  At least that would be an actual effort to identify the best team.  3-4 playoff games where you have a 55% chance at winning is simply a mathematical crap shoot.  The "national champion" will be the team with the fewest injuries and/or the best matchups by dumb luck.  It'll be the team who gets to play someone who upset a better team in the round before.

Not a fan.  If folks can't narrow it down to 8 teams, at most, it's just silly.  Some 9-3 team would someday win it all.

I now it's about money, so it's coming.  The ability to win an NC with the "best team" will become a remote possibility.  The "best team: would probably get upset along the way.

That's true even at 12 ...

I think even now "we" know with decent confidence who the 8 "best teams" are, we'd probably miss one, maybe two, as more data arrive.

Teams that "look" very solid right now are UGA Bama OSU Indy Texas ND  Miami, throw in a ringer to that and you have your 8.

But some of the teams missing out are dangerous on any given.

it's very precisely about money.
There's only 4 'power' conferences now and conf championship games (really just 2, tbh).

Even after the first round of a 24-team playoff, where you'll have some blowouts and fringe teams in, you still have 15 games of roughly top-16 competition after that.  That's a massive increase % of "big" - ie lucrative games.

These decision-makers would sell their own grandmas for an extra dollar of revenue, so forfeiting 2-4 big conf championship games for 15 big playoff games is an easy financial choice.

Our society wasn't always a whore for an extra dollar.  Somewhere along the way, we changed.

Human society has always been about wealth (ad power, not always the same thing) in my view.  I think that is incontrovertible.

It's definitely for money, the point is they are now appealing to a different funding source.  This isn't to put more games on tv, or sell more tickets.  It's to appease the ADs who are worried donors won't step up when a $35 million roster gets you a trip to the Holiday Bowl, for your 8 best players to opt out for the draft, and another half dozen to enter the portal

It's clear to me that there is a P2A and a P2B.

The ACC and XII are NOT at the level of the B1G and SEC and never will be.

Can a random from the P2B win it all? Sure. They have an easier path to get there - a much weaker regular season.

When it was evident that the BCS was here to stay, I was a fan of a plus one--pick the best 2 after the traditional bowl games and play that game at a neutral site.  Sure would have cured the Washington/Miami, Nebraska/Penn State, Nebraska/Michigan, LSU/USC problems.
