Apparently it's signing day, which used to mean something.
The owner/content producer of one of the prominent LSU sites was recounting today how he used to go to campus in BR for the Signing Day Bash where he'd set up under a big banner with his website printed on it and hand out one thousand of his newly released list of Louisiana's Top 100 Prospects for the next year, and report on signees as papers were faxed in. It was a big deal, lots of people every year, where he'd greet hundreds of fans and swap stories. He says it was by far the single biggest event of the year for his website, routinely producing traffic spikes he wouldn't see again until the next NSD.
Today it barely causes a ripple. LSU, having signed 14 players during the early signing period, having brought in 42 transfers (quick pause for me to throw up a little bit in my mouth), is only expected to sign two players today. He didn't say if he even bothers going to campus anymore, but from the rest of what he wrote, I gather he's not there today. It's not a big bump for his web traffic, and really, there's no reason to be there if just two guys are all you're waiting for.
I hadn't really thought about it until he mentioned it....how much I used to like refreshing his web page throughout the day. It was exciting.
It's not just the product on the field that's being ruined for me. The whole ethos is taking a hit, as far as I'm concerned.
