At this point, I hope it all just blows up, along with any opportunity for greedy coaches, AD's, spoiled children, etc. They can all go F themselves.

When CFB is gone, maybe they'll beg for it to come back.

Death of college football thread?
If you want to merge, I support that idea. Pretty much a different spin on the same topic.

PE firms are very attracted to these investments.  Unfortunately some folks view every PE move as a leveraged buyout or raid and that's simply not whats going on here.
Given PE's sordid track record of funding raids and leveraged buyouts, and then leaving the targets as zombies, it's safe to assume that anything involving PE is a raid unless and until proven otherwise.

This is all about getting a share of the TV rights.

there is absolutely no reason to do this other than a lot of the other schools want a quick pay out.
The real question is whether this deal will include a long-term GoR / exit penalty clause for anyone leaving the conference.

As I understand it, right now the B1G has no exit penalty. It hasn't come up, because the lesser schools like mine wouldn't leave the gravy train, and the power schools today have nowhere to go.

But it could be that it's about:

  • If there is no GoR / exit penalty clause in this deal, the "other schools" want a payout because they predict UM/OSU/PSU/USC will ditch the conference for some super league going forward, so might as well get paid out now while they still have a chance.
  • If there *is* a GoR / exit penalty clause, it might be that UM/OSU are fighting this because they want to preserve their ability to ditch the conference is such a super league forms and don't want to be tied down.

Just my $0.02...

you give these short-sighted morons who run the schools and the conference far too much credit.

this is flat out: a bad deal. why would ANY school want to give up a slice of media rights profits- which are bound to only increase over time as TV networks pay more and more for live sports- just for a quick infusion of cash from some shitbag PE group?

you realize there is literally nothing that PE brings to the table for these schools at all. literally nothing. the B1G can hire the same high priced focus groups, accountants, consultants, and lawyers to come up with new ways of generating/streamlining revenue and negotiating better deals from tv networks that PE would push for them to hire anyway.

it's all about one thing- as the screen shot from the NY Times/Athletic article I posted in here. debt. these schools athletics department have gotten into enormous debt trying to keep up with the Jonses. this is a quick greedy cash grab. that's it. that's all. it's really that simple.

B1G gets absolutely nothing out of this deal but a quick cash grab for schools like Illinois that's athletics department is $312 million in debt. 12 of the 16 schools public schools are $90+ million in debt. this quick cash grab helps them wipe out/refinance/pay off chunks of debt.

if these idiots running the B1G really are afraid of the conference blowing up- do this deal with PE. it'll blow up within a decade. once PE vulture scumbags realize they can make a shit ton more money creating a super conference with all helmet teams and not have to share tv revenue with Purdue or Illinois- they'll do everything in their power to push things towards that course.

I'm told that Wisconsin is not a yes vote on this. I think maybe cooler heads are starting to prevail.

Maybe.

Regardless, Tony needs to be killed. Even Kevin Warren couldn't have F'd up this badly.

My thoughts are exactly the same as MDot.  Why give up revenue, when the B1G could figure this out on their own?

only reason is $$$$$. schools selling out to pay off some debt and no doubt AD's/staff would pay themselves handsome bonuses.  only reason to do this ever- whores selling themselves for a quick buck.

if B1G wants to add a 19th school- they need to go after Notre Dame- not some shitbag scummy PE firm. Unlike a scumbag PE firm- Notre Dame actually brings something of value to the table and will help generate massive future revenues for the B1G- seeing as how they are top 5 brand in CFB with massive audience base.

That was my immediate suspicion when I read in @Mdot21 's post that tOSU and UM were blocking it.

My understanding is the same as yours, that as of now there is no exit penalty.  The B1G hasn't had any need for an exit penalty because they've always been the richest so who would want to leave but if a super league of all helmets is coming (and I suspect that it might be) then the helmets would actually have a richer club to go join.

imagine if you will...

tv rights sales to Netflix, Amazon, and Apple- so you have to subscribe to all 3 services to watch games + cable/directv/youtubetv + peacock + a new B1G+tv streaming app they'll undoubtedly roll out and pay-wall games behind- so now you're paying 6 services just to be able to watch the games you did before with 1 or 2.

TV timeouts are now 5-6 minute breaks with even more commercials jammed down your throat. Michigan Stadium or The Shoe are now called Pfizer COVID Booster Stadium and Qatari Air Field. SaudiAramco and Verizon wireless patches are on all the uniforms. Giant corporate logos are at mid-field and in the end-zones- not the school logos & names.

ticket prices double or triple. parking doubles. concession prices double or triple.

official jerseys from the school stores aren't $150-180 anymore- they are $300+.

all this hell and more is what you'll be getting if you get in bed with shitbag scumag PE group. it will be a complete and utter shithole- far worse than it already is.

Private Equity is terrible for the consumer in general and will be terrible for the fans of college football specifically. Private Equity will seek to maximize every last dollar opportunity at the expense of fan service and consumer experience.

I am tied in a lot to PE aggressively taking over the two largest empires on the Las Vegas Strip - MGM & Caesars. You ever wonder why there's no more free parking? Free drink services are cut back to almost nothing at the tables and slots? Blackjack odds were raised in favor of the house from 3:2 to 6:5? And the prices on absolutely everything are nearly doubled in the last four years? Private Equity stepped in and forced these changes for the sake of short term profit. Lost is any sense of courting the customer loyalty that Vegas was famous for and well tipped for - like with free drink service and gambling comps.

Private Equity is more invasive than standard shareholding. A third party shareholder (like myself) purchases a portion of the business with the trust that the business themselves will keep bettering themselves. A Private Equity arrangement is an agreement to take over a business for the sake of controlling the strategy to maximize the company at all costs. On paper, Private Equity looks beneficial, but everybody else (consumer, fans, loyalty programs, etc) suffers the unintended consequences.

How would a PE takeover play out for the Big Ten? Off the top of my head, advertising will be maximized in every way possible. More corporate logos on the field and corporate logos covering the uniforms. Probably strange neutral site games in places like Brazil, like the NFL does to promote their league. A study into whether the Big Ten can become a publicly traded brand with an IPO and ESG score.

An unintended consequence of this would be the formation of a players union that would A) demand a certain percentage of League profits and B) would seek to be disassociated from Student Athlete expectations in a way that would make them professional representatives of a university rather than students of a university.
This is the best way to put this @CatsbyAZ and I shared it elsewhere (247UW). Thanks.

Agree with the above evaluations.

The schools will likely increase their own share of revenue and profit by going with PE.

The fans and alumni will almost certainly suffer for it.

How much have your school administrations cared about the fans lately?
