The only ACC schools with fan bases that would bother traveling for football, are Clemson and Florida State.  I can't imagine many of them are wine and cheese crowd.

Well of course.  Horn fans traveled well to Stanford and Berkley the last time we played at those places.  Good thing the wine was enjoyable, because the football surely wasn't.

It's not travel or ticket sales but TV revenue from the conference.

the ACC is willing to share revenue with Cal??  A program that will take more than they produce

Berkley and Stanford are both getting a significantly reduced payout from the ACC, something like 30%.  I think the full ACC payouts are around $40M per school per year right now, so 30% of that is only $12M.  I doubt that's enough to support even the football team, much less all the other sports.

I won't be at all surprised if this comes true at some point in the near future and Berkley cancels football and just tries to support other sports in a much more regional way.

IMHO they'd sell a lot of tickets to the transplants, though. I can't say how many ACC transplanted fans made it to the west coast, but I would think that when Purdue comes out to USC/UCLA, there will be a fair amount of black & gold in that stadium.

Not a ton of Purdue fans from the Midwest would fly out for it (as a conference game is not prestigious like going to the Rose Bowl Game), but I see quite a lot of Purdue stuff on cars here, and given that we ordinarily would have to fly to the Midwest to see our team play, we'd be jumping at the chance to see them play locally--even though they suck.

ACC fans don't care about football outside of the two schools I named.  They don't even fill their own stadiums.  They're not going to fill up Berkley or Stanford.

I'm sure there are a decent amount of UNC and Duke and UVA alums out there.  But stats show that very few of them even bothered to go to football games when they were on their own campuses.

As for Clemson and FSU alums becoming locals?  You see a lot of their gear out there?  I don't ever see any of it in Austin which is similar in many ways to the Bay Area.

Cal doesn't need much to fund football.  Plenty of Div 2/3 programs exist, granted many make a payday playing some SEC team.  The ACC teams obviously all get a much smaller chunk from that conference than the two big ones, but that doesn't mean they can't survive reasonably well.  One thing about NIL is it makes those programs even less competitive for recruiting.

I'm a UNC alum who never attended a football game there in 4 seasons.
