So every team plays seven conference games, plus 4 non-conference games, and 1 preseason game; or 3 non-conference games, and 2 preseason games. I think I favor the latter. So a 10-game regular season. Or, 10 games in the regular season (3 OOC), but 1 preseason game, and expand the playoff to 32 teams, so you get the conference champs and 2nd place teams, plus 14 wildcards. The tougher conferences wouldn't want the Mid-Atlantic conference getting three autobids, but two seems fine. Use some system like they do in basketball to put together the playoff brackets, with conference champions and 2nd place teams getting autobids.

Doing my double elimination tournament sim for the first time since 2021.

128 teams in 8, 9, or 10 team "conferences" based on traditional alignments.

You play 6 conference games to start the year, then go into a 128 team double elimination tournament.

In these hypotheticals, I like the bigger conferences. and more regular season games.

Everyone plays at least 8 games, 96 teams play 9, 64 teams play 10.  And every game matters

FWIW: replaced Houston with SMU:

Colorado feels a little out on its own--toughest travel in the league--Arkansas feels like it would fit better in the TX/OK conference, and Wisconsin's conference is definitely a step down from the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes East conference, but overall I like it.

Throw in some quality OOC games, to keep up some of the old conference rivalries, and we'd be cooking with Crisco.

I'd rather UW be in the Great Lakes and move ND somewhere East.

I mean, it's a reasonable view of regionalization.  It's obviously a little forced in some cases but that's part of the purpose of the exercise.

I don't really like seeing legacy B10 teams split up, or legacy SEC teams split up.  The PAC is probably okay since the Arizona schools weren't all that historical anyway.

Personally I'd just go back to conference alignments from around 1983 and call it a day.

I'd go back to the old bowl system and the old bowl tie-ins, too.

Ha!

I hope you're a big rugby fan!  Because the game you'd be watching, would look a lot like rugby.

Heh. Wisconsin won the first two titles. They didn't play Michigan.
