Bu "imploding", do you mean something specifically, or just generally it's going to lose "our" interest and become secondary?
I believe that a combination of CTE/injury liability at all levels, and the ever-declining entrance and interest of younger players (due to multiple factors but parental fear of injury is a major one), is eventually going to end football as we know it.

We've already seen the NFL change its kickoff rules in order to minimize injuries and I'm viewing that as only one, very small step.  I think the sport is going to change dramatically in the coming years.

It might continue on in some reduced form, maybe some kind of flag footballish sport, but I doubt that it will continue with its current and former popularity if/when that happens.  The violence is a major part of the appeal.

That's just my opinion of course, but that's the direction I'm seeing.

Yeah I agree.  I've never wanted college football to become NFL Lite but at this point it's probably the only thing that would save it.

Even then, though, it would only "save" it for fans of the top schools, the helmets/marquee teams, the Kings and Knights.

As folks like bwar have pointed out, the sport is already basically dead for fans like him.

you're the only one bringing this up anymore

CTE/injury liability

at least I haven't heard much about it in the past couple seasons
I agree that it could pop up with one injury and become a real issue as you've warned

I agree football leagues are very likely to take measures to reduce CTE issues, perhaps ending with flagish football, if you will.

In backyard football, I recall playing where you couldn't rush the passer for X seconds.  Then there was "touch football" which was flag football without flags in effect.

Maybe we'll see good lookin' women in bikinis playing flag football.  Or volley ball.  Oh wait.

Right, and in this scenario, Nebraska is the Cleveland Browns.

And Purdue is the St. Louis Battlehawks.

Think about it. As Greg Giraldo said, if you can't distract yourself by painting yourself orange and brown and getting drunk on Sunday, you might wake up and ask yourself: "Holy SHIT, I live in CLEVELAND?! What the hell have I done wrong in my life to get here??"

Doesn't matter.  If the collective pays someone a million dollars to appear at children's hospitals and read stories to them, and the committee asserts that's not fair market value, they've just entered into a legal world where it's not likely they're going to win.  Every single time it happens, it's immediately going to court.  A committee from some consulting firm doesn't get to control money paid to private citizens.

If those private citizens entered into a collective bargaining agreement that allowed such limitation, it could be different.  But that hasn't happened yet, and for a multitude of reasons, is highly unlikely to happen.
