On attendance, I always thought it was weird the LA teams play in stadiums they can't routinely sell out.
I've never thought it was all that weird.  California folks don't care about college football.  They don't attend games and they don't watch it on TV.

Eh. USC was getting a lot of bandwagon fans when they were good and we had no NFL teams.

But they've been mediocre since Carroll left and we have two NFL teams, so I'd say the days of people glomming onto USC are over.

I mean, anyone can get frontrunning bandwagon fans when they're good.  I'm contrasting it to a program like Nebraska, that sells out even when they've been bad for... well... decades.  Even teams like Iowa State and Oklahoma State and South Carolina bring the fans during bad seasons.

It's no surprise and no insult to say that Californians really just don't care about college football.  They care about other things, which is fine.

Does Iowa State consistently bring fans?

The Cyclones play their home games at Jack Trice Stadium, with a capacity of 61,500. The Iowa State Cyclones football team drew an average home attendance of 60,384 in 2023, the 28th highest in college football.[3]

I think it was down slightly in 2024 but there's still no denying that ISU has very supportive fans.  I always enjoyed interacting with them when they came to Austin.  Of course, traveling fans are usually among the best a fanbase has, anyway.  Often it's the "townies" that cause problems.

I should’ve clarified the “when they’re bad” situation. Which leads me to realize they haven’t been a particularly bad in a real way in a good long while.

As for the CA schools, it’s fair to say athletics don’t really anchor three of the four big ones culturally. And none are really located in places where college football can be much of a community anchor in a big way. UCLA used to have that first factor to degree, but that slipped badly. Throw in factors of pro sports and at least in NorCal, a low interest in HS sports, and it all comes together.

Cal and Stanford are basically only P4 because the Pac-Whatever had history. But that’s true for a smattering of P4 schools.

P4 doesn't exist. It's P2 now.
