the way I look at the portal is it's good for plugging a couple of holes here and there- but that's it. should never be loading up on portal guys and should only use it sparingly to plug some holes or add a little depth.
FSU is a good example. It looked as if they loaded up with a talented group, but a talented group isn't the same as a talented team.
Week 7 scheduling is complete. Washington @ Iowa 9:00 a.m. PT. Living in the Midwest has its advantages.
It is brutal to treat guests this way, but they knew what they were getting into when they joined.

The Athletic podcast said UNLV had they money, but they knew they brought in two equal QBs, and were totally fine not overpaying for one.  That if they thought he was the difference between the CFP and not, they would have paid him.  And that the money was never promised.  Maybe a coach did, but it was never discussed on any actual visit.  They thought their best bet was to bring in two QBs with the same offer.  A base line for coming, and a higher amount for starting, and all of that was paid.

Well yeah.  Legitimate NIL deals are contracts that are signed before the season begins.  In some states they can be signed while the player is in high school (or still at another college), and in others not until the player is on campus, but either way they're complete before the season begins.  With legitimate NIL deals, there's no question about WHAT was promised, even if sometimes the payer ends up defaulting on the deal-- which has its own legal remedies, since it's, you know, an actual contract.

If some rando or assistant coach promises you something, you should be very wary.  Get it in writing, or it's not a real deal.

Kid was a ~unacceptable vulgar term for part of female anatomy~s hair away from transferring to Michigan only to stay at Indiana. Probably would’ve transferred again after 5 weeks of playing with Michigan’s QBs.

He'd fallen way down in the pecking order and was barely getting any game reps.

FSU is a good example. It looked as if they loaded up with a talented group, but a talented group isn't the same as a talented team.

Worth mentioning FSU in the context of the NIL/Portal/Realignment era given this Athlon article from yesterday:

"It's fair to say FSU is lacking confidence heading into Saturday's game against the No. 15 Clemson Tigers. That lack of confidence and passion seemed evident during practice on Tuesday. Norvell's pre-practice footrace tradition certainly didn't pack the same punch as it did during the Seminoles' undefeated 2023 season. Video of the lackluster race against his Florida State players is going viral on social media."

https://twitter.com/BSonnone/status/1841103992127889789

The comments from Seminoles fans are understandably critical, most notably blaming the new NIL/Portal reality: ("This video not only has fans worried about the current state of Florida State's program, but also the future of college football as a whole.")

-"This is what happens when you’re renting players, not developing and building a culture from ground up year after year. Once the luster wears off, those guys aren’t as invested," one wrote.

-"This is why I detest the transfer portal, this team has quit," another said.

-"Problem is they are all running to the transfer portal..." another added.

-"The money is in their bank accounts. This team is checked out," another wrote.

To add a new frustration stemming from this NIL/Portal era is players dipping out midseason to burn their redshirt and buy time for courting their services with programs they can make more NIL money from.

Yesterday one of Arizona's RBs announced his plans to redshirt.

The new frustration being it seemed like it was only last week (because it was) that as long as your program made it through the offseason deadlines you could be sure of what your roster was going into the new season. Now it looks like you have to wait until game 5 because that's when redshirt opportunities expire.

This sport is more difficult to follow with each passing year.

I'm hopeful that the culture in Madison keeps kids from doing this redshirt stuff.

I'm fearful that it won't.

Iowa is reeling from a 35-7 loss to Ohio State this past week, they are now having to deal with some roster issues as RB Leshon Williams announced on social media that he was entering the transfer portal.

Williams was an important part of the team the past 2 years, as he has rushed for 1,234 of his 1,324 career yards. He was a huge part of the run game last season, finishing with a team-high 821 yards and named an honorable-mention All-B1G running back.

He sustained an injury and has been recovering but has lost his spot on the depth chart moving forward with only 11 carries for 21 yards on the season. Running back Kaleb Johnson has been terrific this year, as he is currently 2nd in the NCAA with 771 yards. He has stepped up and become the focal point for the Hawkeyes offense, while younger running backs Kamari Moulton and Jaziun Patterson have continued to get reps as well.

This isn’t the first Hawkeyes player to make a decision today, as wide receiver Kaleb Brown announced that he would be redshirting the rest of the year. He didn’t make an announcement on whether or not he would be entering the transfer portal.

Iowa was reminded today there is a new norm in college football, and this type of thing is going to continue to happen.
