I presume "inherited/self made" is pretty obvious, so "inherited" covers the other possibility.

350 of them, it's not that uncommon these days.  The Waltons make for 5 or 6 of them.

The most current number for billionaries is over 2,700 globally.  Quite a few inherited it obviously, some inherited say half a bil and doubled it.  And some made it from scratch.

Would it be over 300?  Yup.  It's a low percentage, but a substantial absolute figure.

If we have 2,700 of them in the world, they are a rare breed (duh).   If only 13% inherited it, that is somewhat encouraging if the rest made it, even if they started with a nice pile.  I think one needs to start a company that goes public and then is very successful to get there, in general, you won't get there on salary.  Even a CEO with $50 million a year compensation won't get there unless the company gets bought at a large premium or something weird happens.

I was pretty happy 5 years ago when I hit a million. Now I'm happier.

I could not even fathom being a billionaire. Or even getting to $10 Mil. Not happening.

I figured quite a while back that with $20 million, a person can do just about anything quasi-rational you might like to do.  This was when bonds were paying 5% or so, so you get a mil a year income pretax.  Aside from buying property and cars or planes or boats, believe it or not, you can live fairly well on a mil a year.

The wife had one "luxury item" she'd enjoy, someone to cook meals at night, even if 3 times a week.  Some of the top chefs in Paris were doing this when their places were closed, it was not THAT expensive.

She has a maid service every two weeks.  I think that is reasonable, I think she pays $130 each time.  They do a good job.

I'd like to be able to buy first class plane tickets overseas without thinking about it.  I can't justify the $5 K overage at all.  Times two.  I actually am fine with our lifestyle, if I had oodles of money I'd be working on making useful donations.

If I had the money NOW with kids in the house, especially if for whatever reason (being an entrepreneur, etc) I was still working, I'd absolutely do the private chef thing. I like cooking, but sometimes on a weeknight with kids, I just don't want to do it.

I don't think I'd do that in retirement though. I enjoy cooking quite a bit, and so does my wife. I think we'd be happy cooking for ourselves, and going out to dinner when we didn't want to cook.

Absolutely yes on the maid service. Cleaning isn't hard, but I just don't want to do it. 

And absolutely yes on the flying first class. I've only flown first class sporadically [domestically] and because I've gotten upgrades due to status when I traveled more often, but I'd do it every single time I got on an airplane if money wasn't an issue.
