Personally, I think we can give certain words and symbols too much power.  I think everything that becomes taboo should be repurposed in a harmless way.  
The only problem with that is when there are enough idiots who still follow the old, horrific agendas of them.

Example:  swastikas are solely used for diaper linings or something, as a patter.  Tiny ones.  
3 generations later, that symbol simply conjures a diaper, not hatred, stupidity, and genocide.

In IT, we are changing some classical terms, with mixed results so far.  For example, white list and black list were common terms to indicate presence or absence of a value.  Now the proper terms are allow list and block list.  I've tried saying those, but so far in my conversations with developers, after trying the new terms, I usually have to explain the change.  We'll see if this one sticks or not.

Sure, but that doesn't make it okay to hurl racial slurs at opposing teams, anymore than if you overheard a black player deploy the n-word as a term of endearment.

When words take on highly negative connotations, one's use of them conveys those connotations, even if it's unwitting.  If I call you a "banana" today, it means nothing, but at some point it COULD mean something highly charged, and you'd take it as such.  Our vocabulary is fluid, and meanings change.

words are words, they may or may not convey what is intended

if it's unwitting, it's obviously innocent, but that doesn't mean it's harmless

without needed punctuation, tone, inflection, context words get misunderstood

text messaging is famous for this

we obviously see this on this message board frequently
