Open and wide spread racism was notable when I was a kid in the 1960s.  And it was not solely in the South.  White players would have tried to hurt a black player on an opposing team, maybe a bit less so by 1968, but certainly in 1934.  It was accepted, "politically correct", and politicians got elected by openly espousing it.

I remember when Jimmy Carter was elected governor, he had run what I considered a racist campaign, but he gave his inaugural address that changed that perception, for me anyway, and made a lot of enemies.  Carter's opponent was a Republican who I thought was quite moderate and sensible, Hal somebody, who was a local TV reporter and commentator.

He had no chance, none.

I've noted before how shocked, literally, I have been en famille in France among highly educated people who are very frank and open about their racism.

It's not done here, at all, ever, in my experience.

When we played in H.S. there was only 1 time I remember anyone deliberately trying to take out a black player. And it was because he was a cornerback who threw mud in the blockers eyes on sweeps to his side - repeatedly. He got his - It wasn't racial - it was warrented they would have stomped him regardless

By the time I got to UGA, it was "no big deal" among students that I could discern.  I'm sure some were racist, but they kept it to themselves, 1972-1975.

I played volleyball with some of the Dawg FB players, black and white, and they seemed to get along just fine.  I once spiked our tight end in the face and was upset with myself, but he laughed it off, and later spiked me in the face, pretty hard, not intentionally, it was part of the game.  I was teared up though.  It was a smack.

The fact he was  black was irrelevant.  Things changed fairly quickly in some respects.

We had incidents whenever we played Howell, to the point that we stopped playing them entirely.

But Howell has its own reputation for sure.  Feel free to research it.

In 1934 Michigan’s football team was integrated unlike most of the Big Ten at that time.  So I have a hard time buying that AD Yost was a racist.  The deal Yost struck with GA Tech was a business decision that allowed the game to be played and included Tech having to bench their star player.  Second guessing the decision some 80+ years later is a cheap shot and smells like virtue signaling by the committee.

If they are have to name a building why not name it after Willis Ward. To be obviously one of the best players, and to go through unimaginable bullshit his entire life just to be allowed to participate, and then went on to become an attorney and judge.

Very few white folks in  the 1930s were not "racists" using the current definition, north or south.  It was a widely shared belief that blacks were inferior and only equipped for menial jobs etc.  It took a long time for that to start to change, for some.

Lincoln was a racist.  I'd guess Yost was a racist like everyone else around him.

It changed because of people like Willis Ward. Which seems a heck of a lot more impressive than winning rec ball quality football games like Fielding Yost did.

I think one fact in changing was desegregation of the military,  Folks served in units with black men and "discovered" they were pretty much the same.

Jackie Robinson in my view merits all the credit and acclaim he gets today.

Florida putting end to 'Gator Bait' cheer, band performance due to racist history of term

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/29329250/university-florida-putting-end-gator-bait-cheer-band-performance-due-racist-history

African American babies were used as alligator bait, according to the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University, citing newspaper articles and imagery from the late 1800s and early 20th century. The term "alligator bait" was also used as a racial slur against African Americans.

Well that one seems obvious.

And also, my God, humans suck.  We should probably stop naming anything after any of us.  Not even slightly joking.

A black player (Thorpe Award winner Lawrence Wright) popularized that phrase/cheer in the mid-90s.
