I've ridden the Frecciarossa, the Italian high-speed trains, a lot. Granted, our trips to Italy have all been along their corridors (Rome-Florence-Bologna-Venice and Milan-Verona-Venice), so it lends itself to easy travel along those corridors.

OK so let's assume I'm going to do Rome for the full week with no side trips (although I'm definitely tempted to go up to Florence for a couple of days).

Where in the city should we stay to have the best chance at easily hitting the most good stuff, and then what are your recommended can't miss scenes/attractions/restaurants?

(Oh CD, your recommendation is booked for that week apparently)

I guess it depends on what you want to do. The two times we stayed in Rome most of the things we wanted to see were at the Vatican, so we stayed at a hotel over by the Vatican.

Do NOT stay by Termini Station. That's a hard part of Rome.

We stayed in an apartment about two blocks from the Colosseum. It was so cool to walk by it every day to get to the metro--except the day we went to it, which was also very cool.

I’ve stayed at three Waldorf, Versailles twice, Maui, and Rome ….

Worth it.
