I'd choose direct via Allegiant over a layover with a legacy carrier 10/10 times.  Same.  And did.

I've had some delays with Allegiant, never been canceled. Latest travel data shows them middle of the pack for on-time performance.

The "OMG, FEES!" argument always cracks me up. It's $75+ to upgrade from Basic to Main on a legacy carrier to get that "free" carry-on, seat assignment, and soda.  That's not true, at all.

We also have the Allegiant card. The miles earn sucks, but free priority check-in and drink each way pays for the annual fee after 2 legs. The priority check-in alone makes it worth it.

Badge, if you haven't already done so, you can add your wife as an AU for $0 and you will each get a free drink since you have two separate cards. Hat tip to a flight attendant for that info.

Which brings me to their FA's. Overall, pretty good. Usually very laid back and tolerant, don't see much of the attitude prevalent with legacy carrier FA's. For FA's, I'd put Southwest 1st, Allegiant 2nd.

We flew in and out of FLL once. Both my wife and I couldn't remember anything about it other than a long walk to the rental car counter. So I guess I'd rank it middle of the pack for FL airports.  I flew into Terminal 1, C Gates so I guess I got lucky.  It was about 200 yds max from the baggage claim.

I will say Allegiant's check-in counter efforts are not great, in my experience.

They get overwhelmed easily. Not enough of them to handle a full flight efficiently.

I have the American card and seat upgrades and bags are always free for us. AA Advantage Executive Platinum even gets us bumped into first sometimes.

When we travel on Allegiant, we check one large bag ahead of time. It's $50.00. We always sit in the front too, which is a little more. We show our Allegiant card and get a free cocktail, and we always bring our own water jugs from home.

I also checked the large bag up front....cheaper if done when booking your flight!

I only paid extra to pick our seats, to ensure we sat together, but I will probably pay the extra fee to sit up front next time.

One other thing I noticed was the lack of padding the the Allegiant seats, which isn't very comfortable, but it did seem to add a bit of leg room, FWIW.

Delta and American for sure.

United pulls the stunt you are talking about, however.

I never fly United or Delta. United just plain sucks. Delta routes everything through Atlanta - even to Chicago.

Delta did some unexpectedly nice things for us a while back, my wife is committed to them.  I also think they do a solid job overall with a few exceptions.  Their people seem to "care" about as much as can be expected.

When we flew to Istanbul through Paris, my wife for some reason took her French passport, not the US.  Flying out was not a problem, flying back was.  Turkish Air would not let her board to Paris to ATL with her French passport, it was a mess.  We bought a separate ticket to get her to Paris where at least she speaks the lingua Franca.  We get to Paris and I figure I'll see her in a couple days, I  go to the lounge and then am standing in line to board the flight when she shows up and says she was cleared to the US and they had kept her seat next to me.  She said a Delta agent in Paris went out of her way to help her get the credentials.  The crazy thing is she has Global Entry, so we got to ATL and that card is all she used to get through anyway.  But this isn't the nice thing they did in the past.

Now I always ask if she has the US passport.  I'm looking forward to Vienna in a couple months, I snared seats in Premium for $1500 after a $500 credit we had.

If I lived in Atlanta, Delta would be my go-to. As it is now, it's a PiA to fly Delta out of here - unless you like stops in Atlanta.

I think 80% of departures here are Delta.  It's the entire south terminal.  It is nice to have a lot of nonstops to places though we don't have as many to Europe as say NYC does.

The only flight to Europe out of here is Frankfort, which is a big connection point we've been through.

Cincinnati used to have a decent number of flights to Europe, but Delta basically pulled out and the airport is about a third of what it once was.  They only have one flight to Europe now (CDG), apparently for GE/CFM.

We flew to Miami for our cruise, MIA seems pretty nice and has a lot of flights to SA etc.

I had used a companion ticket and booked us in first, the flight down had Delta One seats for first.  I'd love to have that to Europe, but not for $7-8K.

Yeah, I've got an AAdvantage card which gets me checked bags and Group 5 boarding on American.

I'm looking at getting a Southwest card now that they're going to assigned seating, for the perks. I hate it. Southwest is doing everything they can to get rid of anything that made them unique and become just another airline. But it's such a convenient airline given where I live that I really just can't avoid flying them.

And sadly I suspect I'm going to have to do more work-related travel going forward, which is annoying.
