I was recently in Orange County near Dana Point. The views were lovely, the area seemed soulless. It's as though someone thought, "what if we put a bunch of wealthy people in gated communities with faux mission revival architecture, and packed them all together?" Not my scene. But...beautiful views.

We drove around Wellen Park in Florida last month, the "downtown" looks nice, they had some interesting events and features, it did feel contrived (because it is), but soulless?  Maybe.

My wife said she definitely could not live there.  I thought it could be OK.

I'd guess any planned community like that would feel a bit soulless maybe.

I always wanted to fly on a 747.  They seem to be somewhat uncommon these days, I don't travel by air a lot, probably around 20 flights total in my life and the farthest I flew was probably either Tx to San Francisco or Tx to Mn, not sure but I think San Fran is farther.

Anyways I looked it up, Lufthansa flies from IAH (Houston) to Frankfurt Germany via a 747.  Never been to Europe.  Now that my kids are mostly grown I've been kicking around the idea of maybe going via 747.  Looks like a 9 hr flight.

Laguna Sunrise 🌅

Had a very strange, chatty guy wearing a pink dress toting an acoustic guitar at Laguna beach talk to me for a while.  A buddy I was with who played guitar professionally asked if he could try the guy's guitar.  He said no, he didn't lend his guitar to anybody because he had a bad experience back in the 70's....what it was or what it had to do with his guitar, we did not know.  Looking at him, he looked like he had a lot of bad experiences, in the 70's and probably other decades as well.  Then after a while he got spooked like a cat, said "they" were coming, and ran off down a nearby street, leaving his guitar with us.  We just left it there and went on our way.

More than the nice scenery, when I think of Laguna beach, I remember that guy.

Yeah, my wife went to Irvine on Saturday for her niece's dance competition. We've often described Irvine as the epitome of "beige". She on Saturday said it feels like "Pleasantville".

It's a bit soulless. Everything looks kinda like everything else, because it was truly master-planned.

Although I'm not exactly far from there, I've always preferred some of the communities built before the 80s when the "master-planned" really seemed to take hold. So areas like Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, and Laguna Hills all fit that description. It's not like these aren't nice quiet and quite boring suburbs, but they don't have anywhere near that master-planned feel to them.

They also predate Mello-Roos taxes, which is a big thing too.

I’ve been on an L1011 and 787 but never a 747 or A380.

I remember visiting my cousin in Dallas in 1970 with the family.  I was 8.  We drove out to the airport to see some of the first 747's
