I was musing on our return flight about "Why we travel".  Twain had a pretty good idea, it's the enemy of prejudice, which I find true.  More specifically, why do we go on cruises?  Mainly, for us, it's to see new places conveniently.  As usual, on the last cruise, after we boarded, we had to wait an hour or so for the rooms to be prepared.  Every bar on board was packed, and I think Caribbean cruises in general are "drinkfests" for many cruisers.  They want their money's worth, so to speak, in free booze. The cruise lines make money off this I'm sure, I wonder if some alcohol free cruise could exist.

Anyway, we like seeing new places, taking excursions/tours/etc.  A cruise is good for that, I have determined that a midlevel cruise on a line like NCL starting in the US will be full of ... Americans, mostly interested in the shows, gambling, boozing, etc.  So, I had already reached the conclusion to avoid such things, though our next cruise originates in NYC.  Ha.

As I noted, we did sign up for another cruise from Iceland going to Norway and into the Baltics, and we won another "free" Carib cruise in December.  Maybe, I'm not sure I'm going to do that one, it had some strings.  Whatever.

So for us, while NCL is "middle class", it works for us, we get a larger balcony suite, the food is "OK" (my wife likes the Garden Cafe for most of the dining), we don't particularly want to pay more for more upscale experiences, though it probably would limit the "riff raff".

To summarize out cruise, the first day was "at sea", then we stopped in the Domincan Republic, and frankly I can't recall much of anything about it.  We did a tour, one place was a "rummery" (distillery), this photo of our ship on the right may have been there.  There were a lot of other cruise ships on this package.

We're thinking about doing London this summer. Any tips? Goal would be to spend maybe 6 or 7 nights, preferably w/o renting a car.

The next stop was St. Thomas, which is in part why we did this cruise.  My wife worked there many years back for 6 months and had never returned.  We liked ST a lot and chatted about going back sometime.  We took a gondola ride to the top of this mountain, and then walked into town.  I found a really neat bar and had two G&Ts with a bunch of Louisville Cardinal football fans, that was pretty neat.  They drive on the Brit side of the road here.

The next stop was St. John's, we did a walking tour, it was by far the poorest place we visited.  I didn't even take photos.  This was the itinerary:

Next was St. Kitts, which was "OK".  I guess.  And of course the islands build the dock and include a shopping mall you have to walk through to get anywhere, "duty free", blah blah.  A lot of jewelry shops.

The next stop was St. Maarten which was mildly interesting, part of the island is Dutch and the other is French, which we did not visit.  Then we stopped in San Juan, PR, which we both found "revisit worthy".  The hotels there are a bit pricey in winter, duh, $350-800 or so for Hiltons.  We did visit their larger fortress in misting rain.

I'm far from an expert, I've been there twice for about a week total, never driven there.  The subway works pretty well, remember to look to "other way" before crossing a street.  The food in my experience was pretty bad outside the "events" we had, I had lunch at a McDs once.  I walked around a lot.

As Euro cities go, it's around the bottom of my personal list.  Nothing really bad about it, just not much of interest to me.  The Brit Museum was expansive.

She probably wouldn't appreciate the French restaurant LaBistro but I love their food. Generally eat their at least a couple of times on a cruise
