My wife loves beaches, I don't.  I don't mind early morning walks on the beach.  I can't stand trying to spend hours on any beach doing ... whatever.  I don't like how sand gets everywhere, you get sweaty, sunburned thinking you'll get a nice looking tan, your eyes get tired, the water often is unpleasant and has "things" in it, kids run about making noise ...

I do like seafood though when it's good, fresh, and real.  I especially like the wild caught fake crab strips.

I agree... I love being around/near the ocean or other water.

But I do *not* like "hanging at the beach".

Not a beach guy at all.

Plus, there are things in the water that can eat me.

We go to Hilton Head about once a year, stay at a resort on the beach, we walk on the beach quite a bit, and swim in the pool if it's warm enough (we often go off season).

We found some pretty good restaurants there and a superb jazz club restaurant.  I'm happy to sit on the deck and read overlooking said beach.  No sand.

The beach here is somewhat different than other places.  First off, you can drive your vehicle right on it.  So when I go to the beach, I drive my truck straight to the beach, usually ~10 feet from the waters edge.  This makes it easy to get my stuff setup.  I usually take a pop-up canopy, comfy chairs, a big cooler with ice and cold "beverages".  A great blue tooth speaker with some nice tunes.  If the waters right I bring my surf rods, set out about 2-3 of those with live or dead bait, 100-200 yards out in the surf.  If the waters really good I bring my trout pole and fish lures.  Occasionally I will carry a small BBQ pit and cook, and when we were younger we had a volleyball net we would set-up.  When the kids were little it was a lot of fun, they could play in the sand for hours and chase crabs.  A few gallons of freshwater and a small tub helps keep the ick factor down (especially washing off your feet).  When you get ready to leave douse yourself with fresh water helps a lot.  I've heard from old timers that would go to PINS (Padre Island National Seashore where UTEE just camped) that rubbing baby powder on your skin helps with the sand and such.

That was last week at PINS.

Never heard of the baby powder thing, I'll try that out next time.  We do have a big tub of water just outside the door, you dip your feet into it for a sec and it pulls off most of the sand.  Then a couple of rugs right at the entry way, that can be taken outside and shaken out.  And of course brooms, and a vacuum, to keep the floors as clean as possible.

Also helps to have a shower in the RV and a 42 gallon freshwater tank.  Nobody can take a full shower if you're out there for almost a week like we were, but you can rinse off a bit before bed every night.

It looks pretty neat, but isn't "my thing", nor my wife's.  I'm too old I think.

Oh it's definitely not MOST people's thing.

My i s c & a aggie wife absolutely loves the beach, and she also really loves having 1/4 mile of it all to herself.  Before we got married 24 years ago I made a promise that I'd get her to the beach at least once per year, every year, of our lives together.  So far I've managed to maintain that promise.

Sometimes we stay in a hotel or condo, sometimes we go to a resort in Mexico or Grand Cayman or Jamaica, and sometimes we just camp directly on the beach.  If you asked her, as nice as the resorts are, her preference is probably when it's just our family on our own long stretch of beach.

That is really cool.  I think having my kids at a younger age (and me as well) would change my calculus.  I promised my current wife Hawaii every other year, which is this year.  We stay near a beach, a mile or so, but often we don't go to it.  The beach is beautiful, but coarse tan sand with lava out croppings that can bite your legs in the water.

It's not usually crowded, I like walking along it for a bit, snorkling can be interesting, no coral but you see turtles.  There is a pretty good restaurant right on the beach we like, your table is set on sand under palm trees.  We go in December, it's not this crowded.  The resort itself is fine with me, we do like to drive around the island, I'm hoping the volcano is still active when we go.

When we were in the Midwest a few weeks ago, we booked suites in all the hotels so my wife and I could have a bedroom with a closing door, and my son had the pullout sofa in the "living room". He (like many kids) has grown up taking his showers in the evening, so he usually showers before bed.

But with the heat and humidity, we found ourselves feeling disgusting by the end of the day, so we ended up doing the same. We still took our morning showers to get ready for the day of course, but it was so nice to be clean before climbing into bed.

In India, and Thailand, we were taking showers morning and after returning to the ship after an excursion.  The weather was ... worse than Houston in August.
