Work has sent me to Guam for all of July. First time to Guam. In researching flights to Guam last month on my company’s travel portal, it seems there’s only two standard routes from mainland USA: 1) By layover in Japan or 2) by layover in Hawaii.

Routing through Hawaii is the more expensive option – $1600 one-way Vs $1200 through Japan. But choosing the Hawaii option, none of the flights from the mainland arrive into Honolulu early enough to catch the only flight of the day from Honolulu to Guam, operated by United. So I spend a night in Waikiki while awaiting the next day’s flight into the Western Pacific, so far west it’s the Far East.

On my one night in Hawaii, two coworkers who are already here to oversee a project in Pearl City kindly invite me out for happy hour at a 36th floor steakhouse with stunning views looking south over Waikiki – as great of a layover as I’ve ever had:

I finally visited my 50th state this past week, that being Alaska, before I hit age 50 next year.

My kids made me log this state travel, which has been interesting,  to me anyways.

I only count visits by conducting material acts of commerce, and availing yourself of the jurisdiction of the state and only excluding airport visits.

There are only six states where I have never slept a night,  though for four of those six, Ive been there at least 3 times (Wva, Ark, Miss, Idaho).  My weakest visits are Vermont and North Dakota, both one time,  no lodging.  Vermont is now my biggest drought visit at 41 years since we spent a September fall day driving from Quebec to New Hampshire.   My ND visit was a drunken night in Fargo during a MN fishing trip in Detroit Lakes.

I was stuck on 49 states for 15 years, having reached 44 by age 30.
