Today is the first day in three I have left the hotel…. To go across the street for an excellent lunch, but I’m still dragging, and we have a dinner en famile tonight.  This cold hit me hard.

I blame Paris in wintertime.  Get well soon, and drink some Bordeaux for me.

Now my wife is sick.   We have encountered a number of ugly loud obnoxious Americans.

Paris in February ....

Clearly not the best time to go though there aren't many tourists.  I had a bad cold that kept me in the hotel room most of three days.  we still managed to encounter several noisy impolite "ugly" Americans in restaurants and hotel lobbies, it's embarassing.  I managed to walk around a bit our last day to learn a bit more of the 8th.  Haussman did a fine job of urban renewal back in the day making the Paris of post cards, but the area outside the Peripherique (circle highway) is ... unimpressive, utilitarian looking.

So, kind of a bummer trip, my wife had some banking stuff she finally got attended to.

We had lunch at one restaurant I mentioned that was excellent, wish we had something like that around here.  We had another lunch almost next door that was not good at all (not McDs).

Hotels were $300 per night, paid upfront no refunds, which is steep of course.

The second a result of the first, obviously.

Sorry you were sick, that sucks.  Hope you still managed to choke down some delicious French wine.

In one case, we're in a restaurant and a group of them nearish us were just very loud and boisterous.  One had his phone with a lound rung tone, and it often would ring and he'd apparently look at it for 3-4 rings before answering, on voice, out loud.  Then his group got even louder to talk over him.  Mostly the groups were being very inconsiderate of others with noisy conversations.

Some people have loud voices that carry, I don't know why, maybe they are deafish.

Yeah, when I travel I definitely want to be the exact opposite of the Ugly American.

Which made my Ireland trip with the in-laws very difficult.

  • First full day we're at a pub and my FIL is asking the bartenders, like he comes from the best place in the world, "Hey, so you guys ever been to the States?" Yeah... They're not Americans. They occasionally leave their own country, unlike him who is 70+ and it was his first time across an ocean. Based on their responses (one of who was from New Zealand) they may have, combined, traveled to more US states than he ever had!
  • One of our last days in an Uber in Dublin, MIL is asking the Uber driver in an incredulous tone "What's with all the graffiti?" Really? That's what you, who grew up in LA County, want to ask? You think European cities won't have graffiti?

As the kids would say... Cringe.

You just can't take some people anywhere...

One group had New Jersey accents I thought.  They seem oblivious to their surroundings.

Whenever I think about a NJ accent, it's always saying something horrible, like Joe Pesci might say.

"C'mon. Lemme kill him. I'll make it look like an accident."

GIs shouldn't have left "Kilroy was here" all across Western Europe
