Worked in Atlanta last week. First observation is just how many sports bars are all over the metro area. Only Boston seems to have a noticeably higher concentration of sports bars. I was taken out as a client several evenings through the week, and each different sports bar was busy by about 6pm. Inside most everybody seemed to know each other, meaning the 'regulars' culture is strong. And a big portion of patrons were made up of working class Blacks getting off of work, catching up, and talking all things Falcons and Georgia Bulldogs.
Through the week I stayed in a hotel right near the airport. After finishing up little early on Friday I took a walk and came across a few uncommon businesses. First was Crew Outfitters - a store dedicated to pilot and stewardess uniform sales, mostly for Delta Air employees.
The next was a mortuary specializing in organizing the return of Americans who happen to pass away while overseas. I never would've thought of this as a needed business, but about five years ago I was working in the Balkans and an older technician from South Carolina died of a sudden heart attack on one of our construction sites. The government in Belgrade worked with the U.S. Embassy there to coordinate flying his body back to the States, and I guess a business like this would've received their call to arrange the details.
They are businesses you wouldn't think of on your own, but you realize their location makes sense near the Atlanta Airport - the World's busiest by passenger traffic volume since 1998.
