We leave Saturday for Phoenix, then Sedona by rental car.  We're looking forward to it.  I set up three tours through Viator, we've had decent luck with them in the past.  One is a night time "star watching tour".  I still remember looking up on the slopes of Mauna Kea at night, it was incredible.  The last time we were up that mountain we got hit with a blizzard and had to come down, and the viewing area was overcast, which is a rare event there.

I'm not much of a stargazer but, I friend of mine is.

We didn't go to the Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area, but a hilltop about 15 miles east of there on hwy 83.
It was a moonless November night.
I was VERY impressed

I have a decent 4.5 inch telescope, not much use around here, and there is no way to get it on a plane (safely).  I think about taking it up into the mountains some time.

It's not easy to aim, equatorial mount etc.  In Hawaii, the tour operators provide an 11" Celestron, but it's not as impressive, to me, as just looking up into the dark night sky.

I've been in Wyoming where we could see the Milky Way, but in Hawaii at 9,000 feet is pretty spectacular.  The cities there use reddish street lights to avoid light pollution for the scopes up nearly 14,000 feet.

We once had Jupiter next to the moon and after some finagling I got Jupiter on the scope, it was pretty neat, the four major moons were pin pricks.  If you want a scope, I'd suggest staying with a "normal" mount, the smaller scopes do about as well as the more complex ones, in my experience.  And the tripod is important if you use a long secondary (eye piece).  A good solid tripod.  Mine wiggles if you just brush it.

Oldest daughter is a stargazer and I've thought about buying her a used telescope.
I'd guess she would use it some the first year or so, and then it would gather dust in a closet.

I think the problem is folks see photos on line and want a telescope that looks the same, and nothing you can buy at any reasonable price will do that.  You need a "tracker" that follows an object to get most of those photos.  And learning how to spot planets, while pretty easy, it a bit intimidating.  Any star will just be a point of light.

So, yes, they use it once or twice and then put it away.

It takes some expensive gear to get good photos.

Flew yesterday, 3 connecting flights diagonally crossing the nation from San Diego all the way to Presque Isle in Northern Maine. The furthest Southwest airport to the furthest Northeast. A straight line distance of 2740 miles. Figured that’s about as far apart as two commercial airports can be in the continental U.S, so I looked up crossing from the two other corners - Northwest to Southeast. Turns out the straight line distance between Bellingham WA and Miami FL is 2766 miles.

Visibility has been pretty low out west for the last few weeks. Maybe you'll get lucky, and it will all clear up.

Great Basin NP is one of the top star gazing places, but when I went a couple weeks ago it was so hazy that I could hardly see the valley floor from the mountain top in the middle of the day. They did have this crazy telescope that worked during daylight hours somehow, but not through clouds.

Isn't there a website that forecasts visibility levels? That would be useful.

Aviation web sites should state visibility out to ten miles.  "CAVU" = Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited".  It means is clear out there.

This place is pretty neat for some easy outdoor shopping. Lots of "artsy-fartsy" stuff. Well, that is what Sedona actually is all about. You'll see...

One of my wife's favorite places to stay/visit is Highlands, NC.  It's about as artsy fartsy as it gets.  Solano Beach is another one.

Highlands was settled originally by rich southerners to avoid the heat, it's over 4,000 feet alt.  It's still a bit upscale mostly.  The motels get pricey, like $600-700 at times.

We really like The Park on Main, which has a dog theme.
