My suggestion would be car and hotel, second would be some "land sea" option, which gets pricey.

The cruises just go up the panhandle region of course.  The cities visited are, to me, not that interesting.

I was in St Thomas and St John this past week.  I saw one of the giant NCL ships in St Thomas.  It dwarfed the already giant Steve Wynn private yacht which was nearby.

Here's Wynn's yacht.  Apparently for sale at $200m

I'd pilot that. I've also seen it there, while on a cruise.

Where did you take that picture from?

The big cruise ships are about as big as anything on the oceans, large container ships and AC carriers can be about the same tonnage.  I'm still astonished at their size, the height above water line is impressive, to me.

I'm recalling our trip around the UK last year when the ship hit some heavy storms, 85-100 knot winds they said, and it was bouncing around quite a bit.  The wood in our cabin was groaning all night, my wife seemed a bit concerned.  It was difficult to walk down the gangway without bouncing off the walls.

We were in 30 foot seas coming out of the straight into the Atlantic. The Captain made a (correct) decision to bail on Madeira and headed for Tenerife as the water was much calmer to the South. Good thing they had room in the port. A larger ship would not have been able to get in.

No issues from there. It was nice.

We did our last crossing in November 2021.

Bermuda foolishly denied our ship's entry due to Covid. We went to St. Thomas instead. I'm not a fan of that place.

1&3 Restaurant at Yacht Haven Grande in east Charlotte Amalie.    Quality place.

That was the only time we spent anywhere near Charlotte Amalie.  We stayed out at the Ritz on the east end of the island.

I think St John's has two of the nicest beaches I've ever seen.

Recs on luggage? My wife's luggage is WAY past its prime so she was looking for a carry-on sized bag, and my carry-on sized bag finally gave up the ghost after more than a decade with a catastrophic wheel failure...

Looking for carry-on + one larger bag, so maybe a 2 pc set plus an individual. If you know of good places to buy it (i.e. we have some outlets, I think Samsonite & Tumi, within driving distance), also helpful.

We've always been soft-side luggage folks, but if anyone has an argument to sway us to a hard case style, I'm listening.

Deadline is that we need it before May 20, because that's the next trip when we leave for Kauai. I just threw all the existing stuff in the trash to make that a VERY hard deadline lol...

I bought a huge Samonite hard case 30 years ago.
It's been beat to hell.
I still use it.
I put something in there I don't worry about damage to the contents

I also have a hard case for my golf clubs
after having clubs broken in soft cases
