Incidentally, we see a lot of bad/terrible news about SF on TV at times.  I walked around over three miles with my wife and stepson yesterday down near the baseball stadium where he lives.  The area is booming, many new buildings going up, new parks and an area with food trucks and games, it looks very nice.  The sidewalks are clean and new, I saw one homeless tent over near the bay and a couple homeless folks on the walk.  We ate dinner outside at a dumpling place (it was pretty good), weather was great.

Now, I now uptown in the Tenderloin district it's entirely a different story, but if the cameras only film there (which they do), one can get a very misguided notion about the entire city.

They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

He lives in South Park, we walked south all around Mission Bay down past UCSF.  The area is quite nice.

We're going up to Mackinac Island in the fall, and one of the things I want to do is go across the bridge.
It is worth traveling over it. It is scary, tall. There is a wind warning sign. But not as scary as the old Dubuque-Wisconsin bridge with steel grate. Tall and scarier. It is gone, now.

Rent the movie, "Somewhere in Time" before you go.

I like bridges a lot.  I wanted to be a civil engineer when I was younger.  I ended up being uncivil and not and engineer.

We're heading up a week from tomorrow for a long weekend. Looking forward to it.

Funny note on the subject of Mackinac. My most recent visit was in late October, 2010. My dad, brother, and I were on the way to (then) TCF Bank Stadium for the tOSU/Minnesota game on October 30.

We left home about 6am so we got to Mackinac around lunchtime. My brother found a slew of restaurants in Mackinac on the GPS so we stopped.

Problem: Mackinac is very much a summer resort town and if you go in late October it is a ghost town. We ate at the only open restaurant.

It is a beautiful area.

Side note:
Yes, I realize that the normal route from Ohio to Minneapolis is through Chicago around the South end of Lake Michigan not through Mackinac around the North end of Lake Michigan. We chose the Northern route because my dad wanted to avoid Chicago and because he wanted to make a USMC pilgrimage to Antigo, Wisconsin where one of the Mt Suribachi flag raisers had lived.

I'll also add that the drive along the North shore of Lake Michigan from Mackinac/St Ignace to Marinette WI/MI was absolutely beautiful.

It is.  I took my wife up through there, we stayed three nights in Marquette.  She didn't care for Mackinac Island at all curiously.
