We have been hosting a French couple the past week (they fly out tomorrow early AM).  They said they wanted to see some of the region and fall leaves, so we went for two nights in north Georgia and North Carolina.  The leaves in the mountains were near full color.

We toured Gibb's Gardens in Ball Ground, Georgia (yes, that is a town) which were impressive indeed.  The weather was a bit gloomy.  This was a minor part of it.  If you like gardens, this is a place to see.

We then stopped by Amicaloa Falls SP and the weather had really closed in but we did get a view of the middle of the falls a bit.

We stayed ON in Dahlonega, GA, "famous" for the first gold rush in the US, and now a tourist town an hour plus north of ATL.  I then drove through the village of Suches and then near Blairsville and over the Russell Scenic Highway (which was occluded with fog) to the hyper-touristy town of Helen, which for some reason they liked a lot.  Helen was a dying/dead lumber mill town remade to sort of resemble Bavaria.

Stayed ON in Franklin, NC and found an excellent place to eat called the Glorious Plate.

Not much else in that town really, but it's a cheaper place to lodge.

Drove the next morning to Highlands, NC, which my wife adores and had a freezing lunch outside.  Stopped en route at Dry Falls which was in Last of the Mohicans.
