Yeah that didn't sound right.

Overall I liked Haynes King at A&M, it was a shame he got hurt and then got replaced.  He was their next savior... until he wasn't.

Believe me I'm used to seeing those come and go at Texas, too.
A&M is a fascinating case study. Jimbo was at FSU for 8 years, I think he won 10 games every year except his last and obviously won the Natty with Mr. Crab Legs at QB and then made the very first playoff with him- he really only had one bad year- and it was a pretty damn bad year- his last season in 2017- the team was dealing with a lot of injuries, off-field drama, and Jimbo had one foot out the door.

You figure a change of scenery would've done him well and every single year Jimbo was there he had insanely high ranked 'crootin classes with the exception of 2018- which he had almost no time to wrap up because he got hired so late in that recruiting process- and it was still a top 20 ranked class. His 2019-2023 classes were ranked: 4th, 6th, 8th, 1st, 10th. He got them to levels of recruiting I didn't think was possible for them, and they sign 5 top 10 classes in a row and still stink. Go figure.

I have half a notion that a coach who gets paid royaly starts to think he doesn't need to work really hard at much of anything.  He delegates, and relaxes a bit, and basically is a figurehead.  At that point, what's to be gained by working your tail off?

His recruiting classes at A&M tended to be very uneven.  Like, he'd bring in 3 5*s and 4 4*s, but they were all at defensive tackle.  So it kept the recruiting ranking high, but it didn't actually address the gaps in the roster in an effective way.  He also ran a super unimaginative offense and refused to relinquish control until his final year, when it was just too late. From an offensive perspective, the game had simply passed him by.
