new year's eve
folks have parties to attend
Ratings for the final were down significantly, too.

Yes perhaps  CFB will consider ABC (or OTA Networks) instead, ratings still would have been down but OTA fans still might have dialed in - at least for the 2nd half.

I'm not sure how much it would change.

The Venn Diagram of people who simultaneously care enough about college football that they'd tune in for the final, but NOT enough about college football that they can't justify a cable/streaming plan that has ESPN, has little overlap IMHO.

I know quite a few people dropped cable because of the companies unchecked greed even some of the streaming services have spiked. They how ever told me they would have watched the game, some pubbed it.Advertisers aren't hamstrung by cable - they'll follow the viewing eyeballs

Totally understand and agree. Those people definitely exist.

I got rid of traditional cable/satellite (forgot which I was on at the time) as soon as SlingTV came out and had ESPN, because it was $20/month. I made the deliberate choice that I'd get ENOUGH of the college football and basketball content I needed, and chose to forgo BTN at the time. I'd be in a similar group to what you describe in that I'd be likely to watch BTN content IF it were available on ESPN or OTA, but it wasn't important enough to justify a $100+ cable/satellite subscription 12 months out of the year for a few games.

Likewise there are people who have decided that sports, if they're not OTA, aren't important enough to justify a cable/satellite or live TV streaming service. Especially when you look at Hulu Live TV which was initially $39.99/mo when I joined, and is now $69.99/mo (now includes Disney+ and ESPN+ BTW, which it didn't then, but you now cannot get a plan w/o those). Prices keep going up...

I'm just saying it's a sliding scale. Die hard college football fans find it hard to ditch ESPN...

ESPN is just way too much of the available content, especially for fans of non-helmet teams that don't regularly get featured on Big Nude Saturday or the primetime ABC game. 9 of OSU's 12 games were on Fox or ABC, with only three on FS1 or BTN, and those were the Tulsa, Akron, and Rutgers games that weren't expected to be competitive anyway. Purdue had 4 of 12 games OTA, @ND (on NBC) and then games against top-10 Iowa, MSU, and OSU on ABC. Of the remainder, only one was even on an ESPN network, and that was ESPN2. Purdue had 4 on BTN, two on FS1, and one on CBSSN. For a Purdue fan, the only games OTA were the ones we were predicted to lose by significant margins.

So respectfully, if you're mainly talking to OSU fans, things are a little different for y'all. You can forgo cable/streaming in favor of OTA because your team is regularly featured on OTA networks. For the rest of us... Not so much.

FWIW, I'm in both circles.  Although part of that may be explained by this:

I may go back to some form of Cable/Satellite but it is actually more about Basketball for me than Football.  There are two main considerations:

First, when I initially cut the cord I was single and childless.  It would have cost me something like $100/mo to get a cable package with BTN and I figured I'd rather spend that money on a few trips a month to the bar when Ohio State Basketball was on ESPN or BTN.  Now I am married with two kids (plus another on the way) so even in a non-COVID world trips to the bar to watch a weeknight basketball game are not going to happen.

Second, for football you covered it pretty well from my perspective.  There are only a few games a year not OTA for me and for those few I can either skip it (because my team is generally favored by 20+ in these games) or go somewhere.  it is only once a week and on a weekend so watching with my brother or FIL is reasonable.

Basketball is the much bigger problem for me.  Just this week:
  • Ohio State is at Wisconsin on Thursday at 7pm, on ESPN2
  • Ohio State hosts Penn State on Sunday at noon on BTN

In my single/childless days I'd have had dinner Thursday night at a local bar to catch the Wisconsin game and had lunch Sunday at a local bar to catch the Penn State game.  Now . . . I'm going to try to get the ESPN ap through my in-laws Satellite subscription to work to get the Wisconsin game on my tablet but that may or may not work and Sunday I'm not sure.  I'll try to schedule a visit to the in-laws house to catch that one.

The other thing is Disney isn't just worried about eyeballs on the game, they are looking across the spectrum.

So if the game is on ABC, what is on ESPN?  Yet another alternate broadcast of the game?  Bowling?  Almost every sports fan is just going to watch ABC, nobody is going to watch ESPN, and people who don't care about sports are going to find something else to do.

I initially turned it to ABC, before remembering, and The Bachelor was on.  So now you can also retain the people who don't care about sports, rather than just punting ESPN for those very few people who care, but not enough to have a cable/streaming package that includes ESPN

Yes, the keys here are incremental viewers and, since Disney controls what is effectively a portfolio, total viewers.

So the title game pulled in 22.6M viewers and The Bachelor drew 3.1M.

If the title game had been on ABC, would it have gotten 25.7M viewers or more?

More refined analysis, would the title game on ABC in addition to something random on ESPN, have drawn 25.7M viewers or more?

That's the question to ask, when trying to gauge whether or not the decision to put the title game on ESPN rather than a national broadcast OTA channel, was the correct one.

Good Post,I'm die hard but when the cable bill is getting bumped up into the sphere of essentials -groceries,utilities and such they get this
Hands Middle Finger Sticker - Hands Middle Finger Screw You Stickers

My mind set is to break or make reasonable - if everyone dropped them even for a month or two, guess what they'd realize? Just can't justify even though i can afford.Much better places to put coin than into those C*********'s coffers
