Why do grown men value autographs of famous people, especially sports stars?

I have a football signed by Texas' two NC-winning coaches and Texas' two Heisman winners, that I think is pretty cool.  It's on display in our game room along with a lot of other Texas memorabilia.

It was free, so I'm not sure how much I "value" it, but I do like having it.

I have a bunch of signed baseballs, I really don't know what to do with them, so they're in a box in a closet now.  Seemed like the thing to do at the time I guess.

I have a couple 8x10 glossies autographed by football players - not sure where they are today.

Cornhuskers Roger Craig and his fullback Phil Bates from 1981 - neither were starters that season ( they both took a class that my cousin taught)  I met them in his office.  I didn't ask for the autographs

years earlier, when I was a wee lad - late 60s or early 70s - the local sporting goods store would have an autograph session with a line to stand in for kids.
Minnesooota Vikings, Center Wally Hilgenburg, LB Matt Blair, straight on kicker, Fred Cox, maybe a couple others - one each year

If I thought any of them had any value to someone else,  I'd look for them and trade for cash

Somewhere I might still have Boxcar Willie's autograph

Do you have Marvelous Marv Throneberry signature? Or Carl Furillo's for that matter?

shoot, forgot about Cornhusker LB and Minnesooota Viking Center Mick Tingelhoff

I should actually find that one and give it to the beer cart girl at Green Valley.

I got Emmitt's signature on a card when I was 11 years old.  It was cool to actually meet him and get the auto, but I was a kid.

Nowadays, the sports card market is all about rookie autos and 1 of 1s.  I just like the normal cards.  I've seen people pulling open packs at a card shop and just tossing the non-insert cards.  Blows my mind.

I have a baseball cap signed by Nick Saban and another signed by Les Miles, and a football signed by Orgeron, all from their championship seasons.  Someone gave me all of them, I didn't actively go get them, but like you, I like having them.

Used to have a baseball cap signed by a bunch of the '93 LSU beisbol team, including Warren Morris (of "shot heard 'round the world" fame.....well, sort of famous, to some, I guess), but sadly, that item didn't make it past our family's move from Georgia back to Louisiana.

At Fantasy Camp,  they have one evening for the former pros to sign stuff.  It's quite the sight to see grown men lined up with stuff for them to sign.  They are very patient, I think, it's not their favorite thing obviously.  I got a couple balls signed for this kid I know, and a bat, but most of these guys are more friends now than idols.

Some of the campers, a few, go way over the top with cards and whatnot.  It always strikes me as, well, a bit odd, but whatever.

I have a snare-drum head signed by my favorite musicians.  I'd say I value that a lot more than my football paraphernalia.  I got that for myself, unlike the sports stuff.

I have a collection of vintage 80s and 90s concert t-shirts, not signed by anyone, but that I valued.

Of course my 18yo daughter has now managed to steal 93.9% of them.
