The best current coaches in P5 CFB
« on: December 11, 2020, 07:56:06 AM »
Can you list ten you consider to be the top coaches out there?

Is the list just a list of coaches of programs that have had recent success?  Obviously, the two may be highly correlated, but there could be a difference between top programs of late and best coaches, no?

What are your top ten programs of late, I'm talking say last ten years, and does that correlate with your list of coaches much?

Here is the SI list of top programs 2010-2019 (not that it's right, it's just one such list):

OK here's my list
Off the top on my head,Mullen and maybe Patterson,Cutcliffe use to be bantered about,I don't follow Duke so........The Universities in Indiana are certainly stoked well Kelly,Brohm and Allen wouldn't have a problem with any of these. Many like Clawson at Wake he has taken them to 4 bowl games in which they won 3.Fuentes was a hot commodity when VTech scooped him up a few yrs back.As afore mentioned Fickell/Campbell and I'd end with the Pirate and Pat Fitz at NU.Oh and I still like Frost if he can get the roster filled out.I might mention Chryst but he's not going anywhere - Packers perhaps

Only so I can sneer at your lists of course.

And the above paragraph response of course is not even a list, it's perhaps a compendium at best.

I just tried to name as many P5 HCs as I could outside of the Big Ten, off of the top of my head.

About a baker's dozen.

1919, 20, 21, 28, 29, 31, 34, 35, 36, 37, 42, 44
WWH: 1952, 54, 55, 57, 58, 60, 61, 62, 63, 65, 67, 68, 70, 72, 74, 75
1979, 81, 82, 84, 87, 94, 98
2001, 02, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19

Well, Karl Dorrell hasn't lost a game at CU, so he should be on top....

Current top 10, based on wins:
1. Mack Brown - 258
2. Saban - 252
3. Patterson - 177
4. Solich - 173
5. Ferentz - 167
6. Miles - 145
7. Leach - 141
8. Swinney - 139
9 Kelly - 135
tie) Gundy - 135

For Florida, I'd take Saban from that group.  I wouldn't be thrilled with any of the others (as a new HC hire, today).  I'd probably like the 11th name on the list, Whittingham.  I'm just not stoked about these tried-and-true guys - most are on the downside of their careers.

I reeeeeally wish a helmet program would hire Niumatalolo and run the option.  Become the new/old Nebraska for the next generation.

Fit is also a huge thing. For whatever reason, Harbaugh does not fit at Michigan. His fire burns hot and fast, and wears out quickly - as we are seeing now. He's toast.

That's why I'd pass on Swinney.  I think he's got lightning in a bottle - the hokey, aww shucks Jesus guy in rural South Carolina.  I think that's a persona that reeeeally works if you're winning and reeeeally doesn't if you're not.
He's like a young Bobby Bowden - just missing the grandfatherlyness bit.  As long as he has great coordinators, he'll be fine.  But if/when FSU, Miami, VT, etc rise back up, we'll see.

But if Dabo Swinney was Michigan's HC tomorrow, I don't think his schtick would fly.

Dabo IMO wouldn't leave for Bama when Satan Saban steps down. He's buildt a similar situation and I'm guessing the weathers nicer in the Carolina's.He's on cruise control

He probably wouldn't want to live in such a big city like Tuscaloosa.
