I know great defense usually wins vs great offense, but when a team is first in something, the 'by how much' is in question. While the rest of the pack tend to follow a bell curve, the best and worst tend to put distance between themselves and the next closest.
So if an offense (or defense) is 1st, it's often the gap between it and 2nd is larger than the gap from 2nd to 3rd or 2nd to 5th or even further down the line.
That's one plus for picking Florida, with its #1 offense. Same for '94 Penn State, '93 FSU (O and D), and so on.
