Ohio State leads in everything except appearances in final polls where they trail Michigan 60-58.

It is interesting to me that Nebraska, Penn State, and Michigan State appear to be a bit more "feast-or-famine" than Michigan.  Michigan leads them all substantially in total appearances and final poll appearances but when you look at top-10's, top-5's, and top-2's Michigan falls back relative to those three.

I would have expected a gap between everybody else and IU/RU but I did not expect it to be this large.  That said, a big part of that is that the next team ahead of them (Minnesota) would be as bad or worse if we eliminated the first decade or two from this consideration.  Ie, nearly all of Minnesota's AP damage was done 50+ years ago.

Number of teams in the AP Poll:
 - 20 from 1936-1961
 - 10 from 1962-1967
 - 20 from 1968-1988
 - 25 from 1989-2018

Those changes have an impact on the "appearances" and "final poll appearances" categories but the impact is indeterminate.

Current B1G teams in #1 vs #2 games (overall #1 is 28-20-2 against #1):
 - #2 Michigan lost 35-12 to #1 Notre Dame in 1943
 - #2 Wisconsin lost 42-37 to #1 USC in the 1963 Rose Bowl (1962 season)
 - #2 Michigan State tied #1 Notre Dame 10-10 in 1966
 - #1 Purdue beat #2 Notre Dame 37-22 in 1968
 - #1 Ohio State beat #2 USC 27-16 in the 1969 Rose Bowl (1968 season)
 - #1 Nebraska beat #2 Oklahoma 35-31 in 1971
 - #1 Nebraska beat #2 Alabama 38-6 in the 1972 Orange Bowl (1971 season)
 - #1 Penn State lost 14-7 to #2 Alabama in the 1979 Sugar Bowl (1978 season)
 - #2 Penn State beat #1 Georgia in the 1983 Sugar Bowl (1982 season)
 - #1 Iowa beat #2 Michigan 12-10 in 1985
 - #2 Penn State beat #1 Miami, FL 14-10 in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl (1986 season)
 - #1 Nebraska lost 17-7 to #2 Oklahoma in 1987
 - #2 Michigan lost 24-19 to #1 Notre Dame in 1989
 - #2 Nebraska lost 18-16 to #1 FSU in the 1994 Orange Bowl (1993 season)
 - #1 Nebraska beat #2 Florida 62-24 in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl (1995 season)
 - #2 Ohio State beat #1 Miami, FL 31-24 in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl (2002 season)
 - #1 Ohio State beat #2 Texas 24-7 in 2006
 - #1 Ohio State beat #2 Michigan 42-39 in 2006
 - #1 Ohio State lost 41-14 to #2 Florida in the 2007 BCSNCG (2006 season)
 - #1 Ohio State lost 38-24 to #2 LSU in the 2008 BCSNCG (2007 season)

My defense of Ohio State in having two less final rankings than Michigan is that it is because of the odd six year stretch from 1962-1967 when the AP Poll dropped to only 10 teams.

 - 1962:  Both Ohio State and Michigan finished unranked.  Ohio State was 6-3 and sixth among ORV (theoretically 16th) while Michigan was 2-7 and had no votes.

 - 1963:  Both Ohio State and Michigan finished unranked and without votes.  Ohio State was 5-3-1 while Michigan was 3-4-2.  Neither would probably have been ranked even if 20 teams had been ranked.

 - 1964:  Both Ohio State (#9) and Michigan (#4) finished ranked.  Ohio State was 7-2 while Michigan was 9-1.

 - 1965:  Both Ohio State and Michigan finished unranked.  Ohio State was 7-2 and seventh among ORV (theoretically 17th) while Michigan was 4-6 and had no votes.

 - 1966:  Both Ohio State and Michigan finished unranked and without votes.  Ohio State was 4-5 while Michigan was 6-4.  Neither would probably have been ranked even if 20 teams had been ranked although Michigan might have snuck in.

 - 1967:  Both Ohio State and Michigan finished unranked and without votes.  Ohio State was 6-3 while Michigan was 4-6.  Neither would probably have been ranked even if 20 teams had been ranked although Ohio State might have snuck in.

IMHO, but for the six year switch to only 10 teams, Ohio State would be at least tied with Michigan in final rankings because they absolutely would have been ranked in 20-team polls in 1962 and 1965.  Additionally, Ohio State in 1967 (6-3) would have had a better chance to be ranked than Michigan in 1966 (6-4).

83 is a prime number so I can't divide it evenly so I have roughly divided it in thirds, the first 28 years from 1936-1963, the next 28 years from 1964-1991 and the most recent 27 years from 1992-2018.

After 2019 we will have 84 years of AP Polls which can be evenly divided into 42 year halves, 28 year thirds, 21 year quarters, 14 year sixths, 12 year sevenths, seven year twelfths, six year fourteenths, etc.

The biggest surprise to me in compiling that is that I did not previously realize how nationally irrelevant Nebraska was in the first 28 years of the AP Poll.  In 284 polls over 28 years from 1936 to 1963 the Cornhuskers were only ranked 40 times, only ranked in the top-10 16 times and NEVER cracked the top-5.  For a modern comparison, that means that they were ranked slightly less frequently (percentage of polls) than Purdue has been ranked over the past 27 years.

Nebraska's inclusion in just 5.6% of top-10's from 1936-1963 is a little less than Iowa's 6.7% in the last 27 years.  Worse, among the current 14 B1G members Nebraska's 16 top-10's from 1936-1963 is third-to-last ahead of only Rutgers (0) and Indiana (9).

The other big surprise was that from 1936-1963 Ohio State and Michigan were third and fourth in #1 rankings among current B1G members with 13 and 12 respectively.  Michigan State was first with 19 and Minnesota was second with 18.  The Buckeyes and Wolverines were first and second in appearances and top-10's from 1936-1963 but they dropped to second and third in top-5's (MSU #1) , second and fourth in top-2's (MSU #1, MN #3), and third and fourth (see above) in #1's.

My top group has been OSU UM OU Texas USC ND Bama Nebraska.  I can make statistics support this or that, but OSU is trying to edge out of the crowd in my opinion, in terms of things like numbers of Top 10 finishes.  Bama is not making that easy of course.

The rankings are quite similar to the ones that we did based entirely on helmetiness.

Cincy's and Brutus' comments seem more national in scope which I introduced as a separate thread here.
