Thanksgiving n' all the Fixins...
« on: November 19, 2017, 05:29:38 PM »
Descriptions of our savory morsels have already crept up here and there, so why not make a thread of it?

Every year, a lady friend and I volunteer to pass out meals, then go to a friend's house for food.  Last year, we made an apple/pecan pie....probably the sweetest pie I've ever tasted.  It was a winner.  This year, we'll whip something else up.

The friends bought a turkey fryer, so everybody wins there.  Not sure what kind of pie we'll create, but we're making it on Wednesday.  No volunteering this year, though, we got turned away, lol.  I guess that's a good thing - too many volunteers.

Back about 20 years ago or so, my uncle started frying turkeys out in the back yard and had to make 2 - the first one got picked clean before mealtime came around.

I'm doing Alton Brown's (AB) Good Eats Roast Turkey. Mrs. 847 is making stuffing (not in the bird) and a pie if she is up to it. If not it's on me. I'm also doing AB's green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, a lobster and corn casserole, roasted asparagus, Bobby Flay's (BF) smoked chipotle sweet potato au gratin and BF's cranberry sauce.

That should do it.

Doing my usual turkey and stuffing with mashed and sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, more stuffing on the side, deviled eggs and for dessert this year my pumpkin pie is the double layer pie with cream cheese and cool whip chilled in the fridge for a few hours.  We are in the midst of planning a move, the hubby is working, and the kids are in Kentucky, Wyoming, and Alaska, the rest of the family is spread out from Kansas, to South Dakota and other far flung places, so it's only my hubby, my sister and me this year.  I will call my mom after the NU / Iowa game on Friday to commiserate about our season and munch on left over turkey sandwiches while breathlessly waiting to hear if Riley is fired or not and if Frost is coming or not.  Oh, the suspense!

Is it sacrilege to not do turkey?

It is just me and my better half in Florida this year.  Not going up to Michigan to see the families because I have to go in mid- December to see my youngest grad from MSU.  Then again at Christmas.  So...staying put.

Neither are huge turkey fans....we like it well enough but not really wanting a ton of leftovers.

So...prime rib, mashed taters, stuffing, sweet corn, green been casserole and some good rolls.

No it is not wrong. The original TG involved a lot of seafood too. You have access to some of the best. Go THERE.

The first time I 'hosted' a Thanksgiving dinner was as a bachelor, was for my (now wife) and her parents and a brother of mine.  I had a decent apartment, but a modest kitchen.   I did a whole beef tenderloin, shrimp cocktail, a caesar salad, and yeast rolls (made by another party).    In laws brought the pie.

It's tough to do a whole lot in most apartments.    Nobody missed the turkey and the traditional fixings.

Apartments. In Europe? Holy chit. I can't imagine how they cook there. But they do.

If I had my way I'd rather do something like that.  I like turkey good enough but prime rib, a beef brisket, ribs, any o that would get my vote over turkey.  A few years ago I convinced my mom to start making lasagna for Christmas instead of the traditional baked ham I found myself liking less and less every year.  It was delicious and she makes it every year now.  My wife and her family are much slower to eschew traditions though.

My last living grandparent died a few years ago, and many of my fondest memories of all of them were driving up to GA for Thanksgiving.  The amount and quality of food was legendary.

Mom's side of the family did the turkey frying, that grandma would make a roast just for me.  Her stuffing was okay - not great.  But her sweet tea had more sugar in it than Kool-Aid does.  3-4 sweet potato pies, at least.

Dad's side of the family - 'Granny' - everything was rich n' fried.  I will miss her fried cornbread (lacey cornbread, I've seen it called) my whole life.  Turkey, ham, just plenty of everything.  She could cause a coma with her cooking, in a good way.

1) Absolutely NOT sacrilege to do something other than turkey for Thanksgiving.  It's a holiday, it's a GREAT holiday, and you should enjoy what you like!

2) I love turkey and that's what I personally want on Thanksgiving, it's what makes my family happy because they love it, not just because it's traditional.

3) One of the main reasons everyone loves the turkey is because my dad, and the rest of my family, kicks ass at making it delicious.  My dad always deep-fries one turkey, and these days I typically BBQ another.  BBQd turkey is amazing.  Deep-fried turkey is off the charts delicious.

So no worries, do what you like, eat what you like.  It's Thanksgiving.  It's meant to be a happy holiday.  So enjoy it to its fullest!

Yes, best turkey I ever enjoyed was deep fried. Omg was that tasty.

Going to have to try the bbq idea.
