Teams with the most "Up-Down" Potential this year
« on: August 28, 2018, 08:57:46 AM »
By that I mean teams that could be 11-1 or 7-5, or something like that, depending on how it plays out.

Michigan seems to me like a team that could finish 11-1, or 8-4, without much of a stretch, most of that due to schedule, and an upset could make them 7-5.

Wisconsin, OSU, PSU, MSU, perhaps, all look to be good for 9 wins plus.

Florida and LSU looks like teams with a lot of unpredictability this season.  FSU does as well, they could be "back".  I'd throw Texas into this hopper as well, and maybe TCU and WVU(?).

Teams with unproven new QBs might make this list.  Injuries are unpredictable.  Anyone else show up as having a large degree of uncertainty as to outcome?

Agreed on Michigan. Northwestern has some, too. Maybe Iowa.

Great topic. I think Michigan is easily the most likely. Lots of hype and talent, but we've seen this song and dance before and the schedule is not easy.

I think you can throw Penn State & MSU in here as well. Both are loaded with talent, but a couple stumbles could derail the season.

OSU - only if there's any more coaching issues. If the storm is over, they're not on the list.

I think Michigan is most likely to disappoint fan expectation.    They have yet to play to the level of their recruiting.   Perhaps this is the year..

I think Florida could be 10-2 - or - 7-5 fairly easily.  That isn't that much of a swing of course, 3 close games.

They get LSU at home.  The SEC East looks weak.  FSU is an unknown, and another 10-2 or 6-6 team perhaps.  I think FSU has a good shot at 10-2 personally.

miss state and lsu fit the mold for me.

for msu, i could see them being anywhere from 11-1 to 7-5.

for lsu, i could see 10-2 or 5-7.

I'll throw MSU in there too.  7-5 would not shock me, neither would 11-1.

On a certain level, all of the top-4 in the B1G-E should be included on this list simply because they are so bunched up.  In the B1G-E we have four teams ranked between #5/3 Ohio State and #14/14 Michigan.  If any of the four are slightly better than expected they could run that table and go 12-0 and if any of the four are slightly worse than expected they could lose all three of those plus maybe an upset and a loss to a decent B1G-W or OOC opponent and go 7-5.  At least based on preseason rankings the line between 7-5 and 12-0 isn't very wide.
Looking at Ohio State:
If they are a top-5 team as ranked then they should do no worse than 9-3 (road losses to PSU and MSU plus an upset somewhere along the line) and could end up 12-0.  However, if they are only slightly worse than expected they could easily lose:
  • @ #10 Penn State
  • @ #11 Michigan State
  • v #14 Michigan
  • v #16 TCU
  • An upset (maybe @PU or @UMD)

Of course, 11-1 can reflect that numerous bounces went your way, and 7-5 can be they didn't possibly coupled with injuries.

I still think Nebraska is in the 5-7 to 9-3 band.

Iowa is probably in the 6-6 to 10-2 band.

In theory Iowa has an easy schedule this year, which suggests this could be a year where Iowa finishes 10-2 without even being all that good.  But history has shown Iowa can just as easily finish 6-6 even with what seems like a easy schedule.
