Yeah if u want it really smokey diced first would be the way to go.

When I grill fajitas over coals, I'll toss an onion into the coals as I cook, then after 20 or 30 minutes when I'm done, I'll pull the onion out, peel the super-charred skin off the outside, and then you can just bite into it like an apple.  It's delicious.

I like diced raw onions on top of enchiladas and chili and some other stuff, but a full mouthful of it would be a little much for me.

I've never tried but yeah, I suspect it's still got too much bite when it's raw.  Cooked and especially grilled though, I'm all over it.
