I don't consider myself a "Ford guy", but I've owned a few. And honestly my parents weren't "Ford" either... They did have a Mercury Cougar at one point, but they also had an Oldsmobile and a Buick, that I remember. I don't recall any blue ovals.

But the Acura is nice, and fairly sporty.

I'm sure by now I'd own a Miata/MX5 were I not so tall.

my father and his were Ford guys - grandparents lived next door and shared the driveway

not really Ford brand loyal, more just car guys - always appreciated them and drove something nice within their means

I tried to buy a 68 or 69 Cougar XR7 for my first car, but it was $1200 more than the 1970 Nova SS I ended up with.  The Nova was $700

therefore, I became a chevy guy

Novas were cool.  So were Cougars.  I like pretty much all of those 1965-1970 muscle cars and pony cars.

Oh yeah for sure.  That's why I'm amused by it.  I guess my parents weren't really brand-loyal when it came to cars, and so I didn't inherit any of those biases.  All of my impressions are first-hand from my own experiences, and in my experience, the "Big 3" are all the same.

My dad always claimed to be a Chevy guy, though by his own admission, he sure did own a lot of Fords.  My friends in high school were Ford-haters and Chevy-lovers, so nominally I adopted that, probably just to go along.  As I've previously mentioned, I sure have owned a lot of Dodge/RAMs for a "Chevy guy."

Me, not knowing much about cars or mechanical engineering, I just go by reviews such as ones done by Car and Driver, and what my local mechanics tell me.  Yes, their opinions are anecdotal, but their sample size is massive compared to the average person.  That accounts for a lot of my opinion, ill-informed as it may be.  The other big factor is going to be what I can get a good deal on.  (Or feel like I got a good deal.  I reckon I've still been hoodwinked somewhere along the way by every seller I've ever done business with.)

My dad has an ancient GMC, one of many trucks he has owned of all sorts of brands. Notwithstanding that, he's basically a Ford guy, I think because of a work colleague (maybe former student) who became someone important at Ford. They owned an Explorer for a long time. But they upgraded into an Audi SUV, and now also have a Toyota SUV hybrid. And the ancient GMC pickup.

We owned a Dodge Dart for a long time when I was a kid/teenager, and as a result, and because I'm something of a contrarian--or maybe I just like the underdog--I became a Mopar guy, at least as it related to late-60s mid-sized muscle. I never really got into the big block cars (I'm sure I wouldn't turn down a Camaro with a 427...), but I've always liked the notchback Barracudas circa 1967 or so, but truth be told, my favorite pony car is a 1967 or 68 Camaro. When I was a teenager, 60s Mustangs were a dime a dozen where I lived, but one of our middle school teachers--an old lady with Bride of Frankenstein hair had a gorgeous, green, fastback Mustang; I think it was a '66.

More recently, Ford seemed a little ahead of the curve in improving their maintenance record, and I thought Chevy's styling was somewhere between bland and terrible for most if not all of the 90s. I thought Dodge did a good job breaking the mold on pickup styling when it brought front fenders back in the early 90s, but I have always heard (right or wrong) that Dodge was a laggard on quality control.

When I think of Cadillac, I think of the big boats of the 1980s and the big SUVs of today, but I recognize that it has made some really nice sedans in an era that not many American manufacturers are putting effort into sedans.

But we've become a Honda family. Between the two of us, we've now owned six Hondas and loved them all. In between we snuck in a Mercedes that we really liked, but had to pay way too much, way too soon to fix it, which put us off that brand. (And we're kind of miserly when it comes to buying cars.)

Which is all to say that as between the Big 3, if I had to pick, I suppose I'm a Ford guy, like CD said, because of my parents, but it's a bit like my approach to the Premier League: I have the team I think I like best, but I'm not really worked up about it, and could cheer for another team easily enough in the right conditions.
