Curious that the Atlanta version is private--I know I've driven on such a private toll road in Houston. Weird.
I understand the first example of toll express lanes here was a rousing success, along I-75 NW of ATL.  The revenue was higher than expected, which probably  gave rise to folks seeing an opportunity.  The GA 400 expressway was built back around 1968 or so initially with two lanes each way, and no traffic to speak of.  The intent then was to generate commercial and residential activity.  That part worked.

The last MARTA station is up that way, but rather than extending rail, they are putting in bus lanes.  Now, if you want, you wait for a bus to get to the rail head that takes you into town.

There's your reason.
Just seems backwards. Adding turn lanes, through lanes and exits open up the road, making for safer and more efficient traffic flow. If anything, it should increase the speed by which one could safely travel.

They were going to add a third lane downtown with a new exit and some additional underpasses. I'm almost rooting against it at this point, so that they don't lower the speed limit.

Higher speeds make merging in harder. That's the thinking here.

I wonder if Group A decides the speed limits should be lowered and Group B around the same time adds more lanes.

@847badgerfan are speed limits based more on the design of the road, or is the amount of traffic considered?

I.e. I'd think that you'd add lanes because there's more traffic, and that more traffic might also be an independent reason to reduce speed?

I've never heard of decreasing speed as the result of more traffic.

Freeway speed limits around here certainly drop as one gets nearer city center.  I presume that is because of expected higher traffic loads.

Geesh, an impaired driver on I-75 near Chattanooga driving the wrong way caused a three car crash with deaths.  Interstate shut down for the foreseeable.

https://newschannel9.com/news/local/multi-vehicle-crash-shuts-down-i-75-south-in-whitfield-county-thursday-morning?fbclid=IwY2xjawOe0VVleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFTY2hKN2hHS2xPUGp1Ympjc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHhkYehBl8Oc2OMy8CPk6mMZjTjE24Uliq3Wgg9Q1SmSe47LY3DTE8Osc4R-z_aem_80gdFh7MKvYAf9_HZsIjQA

The crash happened mid-Thursday morning at about 10 a.m. at mile marker 336, and began when a deputy tried to stop a person speeding south on the interstate.

The driver turned into the northbound lanes, driving the wrong way. He then hit a tractor-trailer head on. 3 people inside the driver's vehicle did not survive.

I think what Badge is saying is that speed limits drop because there are more on-ramps and off-ramps nearer the city center, and not because there is a higher traffic load.

Intuitively, I would have thought the same as you. But there's a reason they let civil engineers handle this stuff, not electrical engineers :57:

Now that new 2026 Z06s are being delivered, something curious came to light about the Z06s mandatory Gas Guzzler tax. What was previously a $3,000 tax across the board for all 2025 Corvette Z06s suddenly reverted back to a two-tiered tax with the base Z06 gas guzzler fee being $2,600 while Z06s with the full carbon aero package remained at $3,000.

We reached out to our friends at Chevrolet for an explanation and according to them, you can thank all those buyers in 2025 who opted for the Coupe over the Convertible for the tax savings on the 2026 Corvette Z06.

One of the factors in determining the Corvette Z06s fuel economy ratings is the mix of Coupe versus Convertible body styles, of which the Convertible is the heavier model. Chevrolet’s Z06 had the same two tier gas guzzler tax in 2024, but because buyers in 2024 preferred the heavier Z06 Convertible over the Coupe models, the 2025 gas guzzler tax of $3,000 was based on the fuel economy ratings of the 2025 Corvette Z06 Convertible.

However, the sales data changed again during the 2025 model year with the Z06 Coupe outselling Convertibles. As the gas guzzler tax for the 2026s has been updated based on 2025 sales data, the result is a $400 reduction in the tax for those who purchase a non-aero Z06.

This marks the second tax adjustment in as many years for Corvette Z06, proving once again that what Corvette buyers actually purchase in the real world can move the needle on Washington DC’s fuel-economy ledger.
