Lee's plan with turbos might have been ahead of his time.  His turbos of the time were awful, especially for maintenance.  today's turbos are awesome but, I've been scarred by their distant past and will probably never own one.

My engine block on the Sundance cracked after about 2 years. It was toast.

My issue was the transmission. I've heard this was common at the time that the transmissions really weren't up to the task of dealing with the power, and so K-car transmissions in those were notoriously bad. 

Eventually mine just wouldn't go into drive at all. Engine could rev, but you ain't movin'.

I had my '86 for 4 years, from '89 to '93.  So I don't think it had time for the turbocharger or transmission to crap out.

That car was totaled when I was hit from behind by a drunk driver.  I was stopped at a stoplight, late at night around 1 AM I think, and I saw headlights in my rearview mirror and the next thing I know I'd been blasted out into the middle of the intersection.  He never hit the brakes, never even saw me, going probably 35 or 40 miles per hour.

I know the minivans with automatics really suffered, friends had them, they all went bad.  Mine had the 5 speed and it ran forever.

Well, it sorta ran, it was SLOW.

In other news, this beauty is back up and running (brake repair complete):


1950 3/4 ton. "Old Rusty." Hole in the floorboard on the passenger side has been there since the early 80s. Now it's covered with a rubber mat.
0-60: Never. Max speed probably about 56-57 mph.
218 straight six. Can somewhat comfortably drive around 51-52 mph, as long as you don't need to turn or stop. 
4 on the floor, but start in 2nd gear unless you're on something really steep. First gear is ridiculously low.

you can put it in gear, pop the clutch, get out and walk beside it, won't die, even if it runs into something or the end of the chain, will just sit and spin

Never thought whiplash was a thing until some ne'er do well gave me the same treatment. Around lunch time,sober,1st thing out of the shit stains piehole was not "gosh I'm sorry" or "are you all right". No-o-o,it was "do you know you brake lights dont work". Like Ralphie's Dad - I ripped off an impressive array of profanity that is still hanging over  that road 'till this day. I called him,his mother,his family tree and his God things he prolly never heard and mentioned lawyers he became sorrowful real quick. I had just replaced a turning signal a few days before so i knew all the light were good. Neck was stiff for a couple of weeks but I kept that claim open,turned out we had the same Ins. Co.They called asking about my well being and had no problems replacing parts,bumper, rear quarter panel or a partial paint job.
