I'd venture that those who seek out "road racing" type driving experiences are a slightly different breed than those who seek out "drag racing" type driving experiences. While I'm sure there's some overlap in that Venn diagram as the two are perhaps just different expressions of the "I wanna go FAST" gene, I think even in that overlap most would show a very strong preference for one type of experience over the other...

Yes, I completely agree with this.  In fact it's the point I've been making all along.

There is a large segment of the "want to drive fast market" who are likely to road race/drag race, and who can't, won't, or don't want to, race on a track.  And that's all good, because that's what they consider to be fun.  It might or might not be because they're afraid of being exposed on the track, as you suggested.  I'm not sure I buy that, it's certainly not FF's motivation, and even if it were commonly true, who cares?

Lots of people buy fast cars or modify cars to be faster, simply for the thrill of 0-60 or the drag race or the rolling street race.  They have no interest in racing on a track, despite being disparaged by grumpy types like CD who doesn't see the point in 0-60, and apparently, you, for not being skilled enough or whatever. :57:

I don't think CD sees the point in most anything, far as I can tell.

I have a second cousin who's a big-shot orthopedic surgeon in Jersey who has a race car and likes to track-race on his days off.  He makes a metric fack-ton of $, did his hoity-toity fellowship with the NY Giants, and married a stereotypical east-coast chick rich girl from a hoity-toity family.  In other words, he fancy......so I always just assumed that racing is a hobby that's way out of my price range.  .....if I had any interest, which I don't.

Yes, now you're getting it.

"The masses", as OAM would call them, get their jollies mashing down a pedal and then congratulating themselves for how fast their money goes.

"The elites", i.e. people like myself and CD, have more refined ideas about having to prove yourself in a way that shows you have skill, not just money.

The masses probably shouldn't ever get on a racetrack. They may not have the capacity to truly appreciate it.

You call yourself a libertarian?

What kinda illiberal, elitist nonsense is that?

Maybe I am unique.  I want a vehicle that has both traits.  Canyon carver and road course, but also a nice 0-60.

Proper driving requires both.

0-60 is fine with me, I just personally prefer driving cars that are FUN using whatever metric to pure dragsters.  If you idea of FUN is 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, have at it.  I'd think it was fun a time or two and then get bored.  Fun to me would be a convertible with a stick and 0-60 in the 5-7 second range that had great steering and stick.

Notice that I didn't say they shouldn't "be allowed" on a racetrack.

Just saying they might have more fun at the county fair.

It’s got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It’s got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It’s a model made before the catalytic converter so it’ll run good on regular gas.

The Corvette engineers returned to the Nurburgring with two examples of the hybrid performance Corvette ZORA which could have as much as 1,224 horsepower!
