My wife leased a BMW 328 back in about 2003.  She still talks about that car.  I urged her to buy it when it went off lease but she didn't, she then leased an Infinity G70 with AWD, she doesn't mention that one at all.  When that went off lease, she agreed to drive my 2005 CTS, I had a second car at the time.  The CTS with rear wheel drive had a tendency to "get sideways" (over steer) and she did not like that, at all.

I liked that CTS a lot, I had been driving minivans for 20 years so anything was an upgrade.  I traded it in on 1 2014 CTS with AWD that kept blowing tires.

Any idea how long, on average, the folks you know had their BMW's?  Someone, maybe utee or brad (all electrical engineers look alike to me), pointed out to a Buckeye here that he probably hadn't experienced the downsides of some model or another because he probably didn't own it long enough.  

I've known several, probably less than 10, people who bought Beamers.  Most of them owned them at least 3-4 years.  Wife had hers for a few years, it was an M3, I think.  She grew to hate it.  Thing is, a couple guys I know who didn't have theirs long also had some problems.  I figure it's got to be a statistical fluke that people I know kept running into problems, otherwise they would just be known to be lemons and they wouldn't sell.  But it really made me averse to the brand, especially for the price tag.

My recent experience with the GTI was fine in terms of doing nothing to it but changing the oil, for 33,000 miles, but then the dealer hit me with a $3,000 repair bill which was ... disconcerting.  I declined, and was so miffed I sold the car.

Their list of "needs" was obviously ridiculous and hyped to an extent I have never seen from any American car dealer.  They had the timerity to call or text me numerous times to bring it back in to get it "fixed", I never answered.  

I would agree German cars cost a lot for maintenance.

Everyone I know who's bought VW's have been very happy with them.  Very reliable, they tell me, seldom need repairs if maintained. 

I've always had trouble in their seats when I rode in them.  VW seats are hell on my lower back.  Had some similar problems with Hondas.  My American spine apparently doesn't like foreign seats.

my golf buddy has a 3 series convertible that he bought new in the mid-90s - has done very little maintenance and runs and drives great
I've never owned a German vehicle, always wanted to but was afraid of the maintenance costs and lack of a dealership within 90 miles
I've always been interested and ask folks that drive one - they seem to like them and continue to buy them.

Heh, and I have a friend who's had miserable experiences with two Passats in a row.  Lots of repairs, and the repairs are expensive.  Why he bought the second after the first one spent so much time in the shop, I have no idea.  I think it's something to do with the internal bias that makes people not want to admit mistakes.

My ex's Passat was... Not good. Electrical problems, and a $5K repair bill (this was ~2003 pricing) JUST after the warranty expired. 

So again, 2:1. utee loses.

I have heard that VW repairs are costly compared to the average.  I never owned one, I wouldn't know.  

Wife was not happy with the cost of repairs for her BMW, nor the frequency with which they were needed.  I'm not sure I can trust her account in particular.....I wasn't in the picture then, and she's not good about changing her oil on time.  That said, she already had her Honda for a few years when we started dating and had no problems with it.

My opinion these days is that all cars are roughly about as reliable as anything else.  Some cost more for upkeep and repairs.  

I had that 2005 CTS for a decade, 88,000 miles or so.  I had the oil changed, used synthetic,  somewhere along the line the vapor recovery system failed and cost me $300 or so to fix.  I changed tired ones.  I never changed the plugs (3.6 L V6).  I guess I had the brake pads redone, I don't recall that, maybe the rotors turned.  That was it.

One experience.  It had 4,400 miles on it when I bought it "new".  

To be told that GTI needed a "tuneup" after 36,000 miles that would cost $375 was just a shock to me.  The brake pads and rotors added nearly $2,000, and yes, this was at the dealer.
