glad you survived

and $3 in 1971 was quite a bit of change
It probably wasn't even $3.  Even now, there are some counties and some precincts in Texas that are "dry" but still have this same type of "club" rule.  I was in such an establishment in Burnet, Texas maybe a decade ago, and the club fee was only a couple of bucks, and that's in 2010ish.

Lubbock use to play that game in the dry areas

not sure if they still do

They were still doing it the last time I went there, but the last time I went there was maybe 1996 or so, for a UT football game.  So... my news might be out of date. :)

yup, traveling for work back in the 80's, many counties in Kansas and Texas were "dry"

Usually, if you were staying at the Holiday Inn, you were a "member" in the lobby bar

Perhaps there was a slight fee added to your nightly charge

Soeaking of apartment living (or not), this is going up near us:

Amenities beyond the typical pet spa and lounge, coworking rooms, and EV charging stations will include a theater lounge, a catering kitchen with on-demand wine and beer taps, and a 10th-floor hangout with grills, fire pits, a clubroom, and a private dog park.

But the real kicker could be the tallest portion’s 36th-floor rooftop, which is entirely devoted to amenities. Those include a pool and sundeck with cabanas, a game room, private dining space, plus a bar and lounge with sweeping city views.
As with many new intown apartment communities, two months of free rent is being offered as an incentive right now. Beyond that, the least expensive option listed to date is a 500-square-foot studio going for $1,970 monthly.
The priciest option currently available—three bedrooms and two bathrooms in 1,813 square feet—is actually found on the 34th floor. That’ll set renters back $6,530 per month.

An average motel room is 325 square feet.  Add on a small kitchen and you have a studio.

I wonder if those rents include amenities or if there's another (mandatory, of course) monthly charge tacked on?

Yup, it's been pretty awesome.  A lot of what LHN network had will flow over onto SECN+ streaming, but it's not the same.  You just can't devote the same bandwidth to 1 among 16 schools, as you can to one alone.

BTN+ has every live MSU sporting event as long as a Big Ten school is host.  what you are probably going to lose is all of the classic games

And the ESPN Sportscenter-like sports news coverage dedicated solely to my university.

Like I said, it was pretty great.  But I suppose all good things must come to an end.

I imagine some stuff like the pool is included and other stuff is per use.

This reminds me of the arms race football programs have had.

It is indeed.

Interestingly, shrapnel is named after a British Major who "invented" it for artillery shells.
