MSU's Rose Bowl pushes it over the top to me, but the late season chaos of the Kick Six to knock out Bama, then the Big Ten CCG to knock out OSU, to put an overlooked Auburn team in, with a great national title game.  Particularly in the last year of the non-playoff, makes it easy for me.

Although I'm not totally convinced MSU's 2014 team wasn't their best.  12-2 with a NY6 Bowl win over Baylor, in a 20 points comeback, where the 2 losses were to the two NC game participants (OSU and Oregon)

I know they are a thorn in the side here but SEC on CBS delivered so much entertainment that 2013 season to say nothing of other games that season.

I voted for 2014 for obvious reasons.
OTHER NOTES
2014
  • October 4 marked the first time five AP Top 8 teams lost in the same weekend
It isn't quite such a big deal when that happens early, but that was a wild weekend.  AP top-10 in the September 28 poll and what they did that weekend:
  • 4-0 FSU, beat nr Wake 43-3
  • 4-0 Oregon, lost 31-24 at home to Zona (Thursday night)
  • 4-0 Bama, lost 23-17 at #11 Ole Miss
  • 4-0 Oklahoma, lost 37-33 at #25 TCU
  • 4-0 Auburn, beat #15 LSU 41-7
  • 5-0 aTm, lost 48-31 at #12 MissSt
  • 4-0 Baylor, beat nr Texas 28-7
  • 4-0 UCLA, lost 30-28 at home to nr Utah
  • 4-0 ND, beat nr Stanford 17-14
  • 3-1 MSU (lost to Oregon early), beat #19 Nebraska 27-22 at home

That rearranged the poll rather significantly, the new poll on October 5 was:
  • 5-0 FSU
  • 5-0 Auburn (up three)
  • (3/4 tie) 5-0 Ole Miss (up seven-and-a-half)
  • (3/4 tie) 5-0 MissSt (up six-and-a-half)
  • 5-0 Baylor (up two)
  • 5-0 ND (up three)
  • 4-1 Bama (down four)
  • 4-1 MSU (up two)
  • 4-0 TCU (up 16)
  • 5-0 Zona (up from nr)
  • 4-1 Oklahoma (down seven)
  • 4-1 Oregon (down 10)
  • 4-1 UGA (n/c)
  • 5-1 aTm (down eight)
  • 4-1 tOSU (up five)

The four eventual CFP participants are in bold
  • #1 FSU won out but incredibly unimpressively, dropped to #3, and lost their semi-final badly to #2 Oregon
  • #7 Bama won out.  Their loss to Ole Miss did not cost them an SECCG berth because Ole Miss lost to LSU and Auburn in back-to-back weeks.  Bama moved to #1 and lost their semi-final to #4 Ohio State.
  • #12 Oregon won out including avenging their loss to Zona in the PACCG.  They climbed to #2, beat #3 FSU easily in their semi-final and lost badly to tOSU in the CG.
  • #15 tOSU won out including a 59-0 thrashing of Wisconsin in the B1GCG and climbed to #4 in the final CFP rankings.  They won their semi-final over Bama by a TD (42-35) then blew out Oregon in the CG (42-20).

I like 14 because F- FSU.

The playoff in 14 gave me 2 amazing things - OSU mashing the Bama D.  It's not that I was for it or against it, I was simply dumbfounded by it.  And Oregon curb-stomping the Noles.  That was hot.

Bama just straight up getting beaten was nuts.  Look at their previous losses the 3 years prior:
2011:  allowed 9 points in an OT game vs LSU
2012:  Johnny Football doing crazy shit
2013:  The kick-6 (crazy shit) and the Sugar Bowl vs OU (didn't watch, and you know, lack of motivation)
2014:  Ole Miss doing crazy shit (just watch the highlights)

That MSU-Nebraska 2014 game was fairly nuts.  Both offenses were awful, but MSU hit on a few big plays to take a commanding lead.  But then it flipped.  MSU went into a shell, and kept going three and out.  Nebraska got a punt return TD to make it a one score game.  Yet MSU still just needed a chip shot field goal to win it, but missed.  Nebraska drove, but MSU forced an INT in the red zone to win.

Huskers and Spartans have had many good close entertaining games since the Skers joined the conference

2014 was a good one - many Husker fans quit watching in the 3rd quarter

many thought the Husker players would quit, but it was some of the fans that quit that night

Although I'm not totally convinced MSU's 2014 team wasn't their best.  12-2 with a NY6 Bowl win over Baylor, in a 20 points comeback, where the 2 losses were to the two NC game participants (OSU and Oregon)
FWIW:
I strongly believe that 2013 was Dantonio's best team at MSU.  The 2013 team's results against teams that received votes in the final AP Poll:
  • beat #11 Stanford 24-20 in Pasadena
  • beat #12 tOSU 34-24 in Indianapolis (I was there, ugh)
  • lost to #21 Notre Dame in South Bend early in the season (9/21, 17-13)
  • beat RV Nebraska 41-28 in Lincoln
  • beat RV Iowa 26-14 in Iowa City

They played five teams that received votes  in the final AP poll and NONE at home.  That is a ridiculously tough schedule.  They beat two at neutral sites, beat two on the road, and lost to one on the road and the loss was close.

For comparison, the 2014 teams' results against teams that received votes in the final AP Poll:
  • lost 49-37 at home to #1 tOSU
  • lost 46-27 to #2 Oregon in Eugene
  • beat #7 Baylor 42-41 in Arlingnton, TX
  • beat RV Nebraska 27-22 at home

The 2014 team played one less team that finished with votes and played two at home (1-1), one at a neutral site (1-0) and one on the road (0-1).  Losing to the two NC game participants obviously isn't anything to be ashamed of but neither game was particularly close and the Spartans finished with just one win over a ranked team and that was by a single point.

IMHO, MSU's 2013 resume is MUCH stronger than their 2014 resume.
