Minnesota @ Wisconsin - Postgame

Does this game portend anything about Minnesota football next year?

They are young, but I don't think so. It seems Wisconsin's four turnovers were the death knell for the Badgers. Wisconsin won the other statistical battles.

I keep looking for signs P.J. Fleck is turning the program around, but the only thing I see, is it's the youngest team in NCAA FBS football. Does that mean player retention is down, or is it a good thing?

I think the Gophers are the youngest team for several reasons.  first, guys were booted in Claeys last year that the team still haven't recovered from. then others left due to the change in coaches.  others left when they saw a youth movement that did not include them.  add to that several injuries to some experienced players and you come up with the youngest team

are there signs of turning the corner yes but this year was way too inconsistent and that may get better with experience.  recruiting has been better and that will help.  changing a coordinator seems to have helped in a small sampling of 3 games (2-1 against the 3 team's leading the west division)

The thing is can they continue to improve over the summer?  They do get several players back from injuries but will they be the same players they were before the injuries?

there are holes that are being addressed in recruiting that should help solidify the team even more.

hopefully the team gets to the next level. time will tell

The Gophers could be an interesting team next year. If you look at it, they had three very solid wins in Purdue, Wisconsin, and Fresno (May be the best win of their season looking back). You are what your record is though, and losses like Illinois hang out there.

They lose very little next year, get bowl practice time, and get back a couple key injuries from this year like Winfield. The densive coordinator switch also appeared to help, but we’ll need to see a larger sample size on that one.

The Gophers won this game because the Badger QB turned the ball over 4 times, which resulted in 24 points for the bad guys. That's the game. He had some "help", don't get me wrong.

For example, I can point to the easy catch that AJ Taylor dropped near the end of the 2nd quarter. He had a first down if he catches that pass, which was a good one. Instead, the Badgers punt and Minnesota returns it for a TD. Those things add up and it's only one example of many.

Speaking of Nebraska, they finished on the upswing. The team to look out for in the west in 2019 is the Cornhuskers. I don't know that they would win the division, but they should be back to respectability.

Its time the West starts to flex some muscle.  5 teams going bowling compared to 4 from the East.  We need to now increase the levels of bowl games the west go to!

Just because the skunks fumigated their own building doesn't mean an automatic loss to the Gophers. Ive seen that story too many times. But that drive that ran 9 minutes off the clock to start the 4th quarter and forced the ball into Hornibrook's hands down the stretch (and out of them 3 plays later) was all Gophers. And most of the players on the field were freshmen that were forced into playing time due to injuries or other extracurriculars.

As noted elsewhere, Fleck is indeed a loudmouthed used car salesman. But yesterday's win was some validation of the tactics. Hell, he talked Winfield out of both A) taking an eight-figure defamation settlement off the university and B ) leaving to play somewhere else.

One has to wonder what would have happened if Fleck had cashiered Smith earlier on. The difference in defenses from Nebraska and Illinois to the last three games was as as stunning as it was substantial, all the while using the same players.

The head gerbil talked Saturday night about how the axe was home and that it only took two years to do it.

I thought this was year 1? I mean, if last year was year zero and all that BS.
