Yup good luck.

One of my peers on my team just retired, it might end up saving me for another few months...

I worked 32 years for the same company, was moved around some between sites in Cincy.  That career is probably disappearing now.

I did look around 3-4 times, I recall interviewing with a company that had an opening for what was titled a two level promotion for me, and the hiring managed said something like "So, you won't be expecting to get paid that much here, will you?".

Welp, I’ve been posting to this thread for awhile talking about how I want to make it to 50 etc but now I’m not really sure I will make it that far. Our company is not doing so hot, they’re restructuring , laying people off, and I really don’t have any work in my department. I honestly expect them to come pick me up any day. It’s funny how this stuff plays out.  8 months until I’m 50.

Good news is that the guy next door ( same job) told them he wanted to retire, he might take the hit instead of me. He’s in his mid to late 50’s.

I hate to derail your retirement thread, but following this line, I'm going to be really interested to see what's covered in our monthly dept. meeting this Thursday.  With the DOE recently announcing it's anticipated major downsizing, I figure state universities like mine--which I'd assume are in a very different position than the ones in the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System--are going to be scrambling to figure out how to proceed.  Additionally, I haven't had much to do lately either.  I've been handling some update requests for old projects, but in most cases those turn out to be like 30 minutes worth of work.  Nothing new has been coming in.  My supervisor indicated prior to the holidays that things were slow but would pick up after the break when the Spring semester started, but that hasn't been the case.

I wouldn't say I'm worried about being laid off, but there's enough going on to raise my eyebrows.

No worries. Derailing threads, it’s literally what we do best. I e derailed my own thread more than once.

A friend/coworker is about to retire.  We only converse by email these days and an occasional text.  The thing is he reached a rather high level at the company, one slot below Chief Legal Officer, he has a gaudy title and I'm sure a gaudy paycheck.  I couldn't guess what his retirement account would be, the company is more than generous in that.

We're had some back and forths about what he should look for in a retirement location and he informed me last week they are staying in Cincy because they have so many family and friend connections there.  OK, fine choice, with some bank you can live quite well there, and of course travel or get a second home somewhere.  He doesn't have any committed hobbies at this point.  He doesn't care for golf.  He's 60ish.

It's interesting to me how folks who are "comfortable" decide where to stay.  Another friend was my wife's boss, really neat guy, was President of a large company and French, had a nice house near us in Cincy, but went back to France because of family.  He said he didn't really want to otherwise.  They used to travel a lot but now are getting up there in years and health is beginning to be a limiter.  They are coming over in late August for this event in Cincy and we'll see them there and they talk about visiting us here but I suspect that won't happen.

We'll all hit an age where "doing things" becomes unattractive.  My idea is to do stuff now while we can.  Even a person in good health at 80 is going to really feel it.

Yeah for sure, do stuff while you can.

My parents loved to travel, they loved to go on cruises, but they're both over 80 now and my mom's health just isn't up to it, she can get around town okay still but there's no way she can do the amount of walking it takes to really travel the way they used to.  My dad's still walking 3 miles per day but of course he's not planning on going anywhere without her.

So they still get around town, and occasionally to other cities to see friends, but their days of real travel, are officially over.

My buddy's Dad was in great health at 88 living in England, he told me a while back.  He was walking extensively up and down hills near Carlyle.  Then one day he slipped and broke a hip, I think, was hospitalized.  My friend said he went over to see him and he was in bad shape weeks later.  They more or less fixed the hip issue, but in the mean time he had degraded to where he could barely walk.  He never got back into it, being bedridden for a few weeks did him in.

My greatgrandmother lived to 102.  My Dad told me she was plowing behind a mule at 90, which might be exaggerated.  But a kind of random event can suddenly put you out of shape and getting back to it can be problematic, you just don't recover.

My Dad's side of the family were long "livers", several centenarians and nearly all lived past 90 including my parents, so I figure I should plan on that for me (if I don't drink myself to liver failure).  My wife keeps saying I'll easily outlive her, that is a prospect I do not relish, at all.  I have a dream about it occasionally and wake up in a sweat.

My Dad's mother was in good health when her husband died (at 87), and she went six months later.  My Dad said she just gave up living.
