So, it's not bacon.
Eh, "bacon" by definition only refers to pork, so anything not made from pork isn't bacon. But it is not defined as being from the belly--other parts of the animal can be used and still be "bacon".

But colloquially, I think it's ok to refer to other meats that are prepared in the same manner of curing [and possibly smoking] as bacon as "xxxx bacon", like "turkey bacon" or "duck bacon". And in this case, I don't think the area of the animal the meat is from is meaningful as far as whether we call it bacon. I think it's fair to refer to it as "xxxx bacon" if it is cured [and possibly smoked] and bears resemblance to something we'd identify as bacon.

The picture CD posted with the thick fat cap on the duck breast "looks" a lot more like American bacon than, say, Canadian bacon, which is from the loin. But Canadian bacon is still bacon.

I imagine it tastes somewhat akin to bacon, hence the name.  Never had it.  My wife orders stuff from that site fairly often.

I've heard pretty much every part of the pig referred to as bacon in my travels.

I wanted to get a personalized license plate.

HAMR DWN

Double meaning...

  • A Purdue sports saying is "Boiler up! Hammer down!"
  • Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) is kinda a big deal in my industry at the moment.

Well, apparently California has an issue with anything on a license plate that can be construed in any way as a porcine reference, so they didn't like the "HAM" part.

Hmm... Maybe this should go in the grumpy thread.

Meaning b/c cops have often been referred to as "pigs", they don't allow anything on a license plate of the sort. Ham counts.

Real story:
Our art teacher is fond of the British baking contest show and regularly watches the BBC channel.
She got a custom plate like LUV BBC
After some interesting reactions from other drivers, she told a friend.
The friend explained what BBC stands for to a % of the population.
She got her plate changed.

You could create a whole language with just these forbidden combos.
