I've never had Whataburger, but heard that it's nothing special.
They're all just super sized sliders

Dude, reading through that and it seems like half those places are closed now.

Also, no point in going to a pizza place or home-cooking place in San Antonio, you can get that stuff anywhere.

Tex-Mex is what you want to order when you're in SA.  They have some of the best.

He specifically ASKED about the burger.

I already suggested Tex-Mex, but i don't know the go-to places there, like I do in Austin.  But the locals know.

For the most part, we'll be eating at the in-laws house, so mostly not hitting restaurants.

That said, we hit this place when we first landed Saturday as it was going to be too late to cook:

https://laspalapas.com/

It was solid Tex-Mex, as far as I could tell. I have little to compare it to, as I'm sure Chicago Tex-Mex doesn't compare to what's down here.

I had the Carne Guisada Plate which was good but not "knock my socks off" good... Their tortillas were quite nice. The chips & salsa didn't wow me... The red salsa was milder than mild, and the green salsa had a little more heat but not much flavor. I did enjoy the schooners of Shiner Bock tho.

But for the money, it seemed like good value, and I have no complaints.

Is San Antonio where the Southwest begins?

It's my goal to get past when driving from Phoenix to Gainesville, both ways.  Get past San Antone, then sleep.

My two favorite places in Austin serve VERY hot salsa.  You can ask for mild but if you don't specify, you're getting the hot stuff.

Well it kind of depends.  If you're going to the gringo places that have fancy patios and happy hours with drink specials, then yeah, they're going to have a selection of salsas and the first one probably isn't that spicy.

If you're going to a little 6-table joint wedged into a strip center with an "el" or "la" before its name, then chances are they have only one salsa and it's probably pretty spicy.

I like gringo places here, and I like the reverse as well, but they are a drive up the highway for us.

We both love dining outside, so the local gringo places work for us.  My wife orders fajitas nearly every time, I have no idea if that dish is "traditional", it's pretty simple really, I make it at home when we have the gozintas.  Our Kroger sells gozintas pretty much all the time fortunately.  Even in Cincinnati I could find them.
