Yeah InO fries are truly terrible.

Also, do people actually hype a frosty?  I could see hyping a blizzard from DQ, but a frosty?

Maybe in 1987.  I'm getting old.

The on thing the Varsity has that I like is a frosted orange.  I've never seen them elsewhere.

As for fast food burgers, some places have pretty good ones, but like steak, I can fix burgers at home pretty easily that are better.

Did Whataburger. Ordered the #5 with grilled onions & grilled jalapeno...

Positive: The patty was nice. Good char. Good size, good taste. Definitely solid. The ability to add grilled onions and grilled jalapeno is nice. I particularly liked the jalapeno. I couldn't really identify any grilled onion in there, but that might be that I prefer fresh onion anyway which are stronger flavor... Also, the fries were decent (which compared to InO, "decent" is an upgrade).

Negative: OMG could the bacon suck any more? It was the typical fast food paper-thin bacon. What's the goddamn point? Leave it off if you're going to serve me that crap. Also, the tomatoes were paltry. The lettuce was chopped pretty small and not really crunchy or appetizing at all. But the biggest issue was the construction. It was FLAT. I unwrapped it from the paper, and I could have sworn someone put a 5# brick on the damn thing before it came out.

Honestly, I was unimpressed. In a comparison to InO, I would say that the size of the patty makes the Double Double the better comparison, but even with Texas prices, a Whataburger (not the #5) is $5.99 while I believe a Double Double runs $5.65 in SoCal, a much more expensive location. And on the DD, you get an extra [thick] slice of cheese, a big slice of fresh cold tomato, a sizable amount of crunchy lettuce, as well as spread. And it's on a butter-toasted bun that isn't compressed by a boot under Andre the Giant before it's served to you. If you want pickles, grilled onions, or yellow peppers, all are available for free just like Whataburger.

So... It wasn't a bad burger. Honestly there were some good things there--although I'd never ever order it with bacon again. I'd put it equal to above the general fast food chains.

But it ain't no %&*#^% In n Out.

Whataburger was bought by a PE firm from Chicago a few years back and it shows in the decline in food quality.

But it's still better than InO tiny flavorless meat.

I've never had Whataburger, but heard that it's nothing special.

It's fun to try these major chain burgers in foreign countries, they are always "different".  I had a Whopper in Copenhagen, it was ... different.  A Big Mac in London and in France, quite different from each other (and smaller than here).  I wanted to try one in Asia but never had a chance.  There are KFCs everywhere around the world (no burgers there).

The last Whopper I had in the US was not very good at all relative to what I've had previously, but I rarely get FF burgers.

Flavorless? They put a nice char on the burger just like Whataburger.

I'll give you "tiny"--it's why I say the appropriate comparison is the Double Double. The single cheeseburger isn't the appropriate ratio for me when you've got all the rest of the good stuff on the InO burger.

Which you could ask "how can you compare a double cheeseburger from InO to a single Whataburger?" Well--despite WILDLY different costs of doing business between CA and TX, the Double Double is still a less expensive burger.
